Sue G in PA Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 My dd11 has finished Saxon 7/6. I have 8/7 and Alg. 1/2 but I'm not certain I want to continue w/ Saxon. It's getting rather tedious for her. Also, I've not heard great things about Saxon from here on out. If not Saxon for Pre-Alg. then what? Any recommendations would be very helpful. I do NOT have a ton of money to dish out. It must be economical so no Chalkdust or TT! :) Thanks in advance! Quote
Ellie Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Although you will hear/read negative comments about every publisher, Saxon has stood the test of time. I would have no qualms about continuing to use it (who's to say your dd would like another product better than Saxon?). My vote would be to continue, using Math 87, then Algebra 1. Quote
ldee Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 I have found that TT covers the same material as Saxon, it is spiral like Saxon; but it has the cd rom and the problems worked out. It is easier for me in the record keeping and grading department. Quote
LearningScholar Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 I'm not that familiar with Saxon, so I don't know where 76 ends or 87 begins compared to other programs. But I would look into Lial's. You can get Lials VERY cheap used. I myself picked up a set from BCM all the way to Pre-Calculus just for reference. The hardest part was finding the correct solution manuals to go with the books. The Lials progression would be Lial's BCM or Basic College Math Most use this as a Pre-Algebra course it starts with addition and subtraction and covers everthing you should know before Algebra. Lial's Pre-Algebra I don't have this book. I recently recall reading some posts where in retrospect they wished they would have used BCM in 6th grade instead of 7th and used this Pre-Algebra book inbetween BCM and Algebra. Lial's Introductory Algebra This would cover Algebra 1 Lial's Intermediate Algebra This would be Algebra 2 Lial's Pre-Calculus or College Algebra and Trigonometry Both of these are the SAME book with two differnt covers/names. Lials also has a Geometry course but it's rarer and more expensived used than her other books above. Quote
Lori D. Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Sue, you might find this recent thread on Saxon 87 of interest: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41397 Warmly, Lori D. Quote
