Johanna
When do you teach or reinforce rules? I would like to do dictation for my spelling with dd8. But, I am sorta scared to let go of the idea of teaching rules (even though she seems to be a memory speller, and rules dont seem to help her). She sees a word and remembers patterns. MerryAtHope
I did this last fall, only I didn't use Spelling Wisdom. I have a great book called The ABC's and All Their Tricks that has spelling patterns alphabetized & all kinds of wonderful tidbits about when to use certain spellings etc... I often referred to this when I wanted to tell my kids why a spelling was one way and not another (if there's a reason, or if it's a pattern). I think dictation works great for natural spellers. However, even though both of my kids improved in spelling, I decided they really needed a more rules-based approach. We ended up with All About Spelling (which does incorporate dictation...but not the kind of dictation where you say, "wow!" iykwim. Just plain sentences with the spelling word in it. We still do regular dictation, and I still go over patterns in hard-to-spell words in that. Hope you find what works for you! ldee
I say the rule if my son seems to have trouble writing the word correctly.
Rhonda in TX
I plan on using Spelling Wisdom next year and had the same concern. Somebody recommended Handy English Encoder/Decoder. We're going to spend time each Friday covering rules, adding one new one (or more) each week. It will take us more than one year to work through it at that pace, but I'm okay with that. Johanna
great recommendation! THis book looks handy! It almost makes more sense to learn a rule as you need it ......then to learn them all and be completely dependent on them. She is a visual speller, but the rules would help solidify the longer words and the ones she misses often. I could pull it out and explain why something is spelled a certain way.
