I've been watching a tv series this summer from Netflix from the 90's. I've been thinking - I can't believe this was on 10 years ago bc my clothes look like this. Am I out of style?! Or have things not changed all that much?

I noticed the teens in the series wearing tummy bearing t shirts - that's "out" thankfully! I still wear dark boot legged jeans, long cardigans, rayon dresses (mine are long - maybe "out?"). Their shoes were chunkier and now everyone wears feminine ballet flats. I've noticed some more tunics and babydoll type shirts lately in ads, but not much out in real life. That's all that's changed in a decade?

I don't think so.

The 60's & 70's were bright and colorful.

The 80's were....well, hairsprayed and caked on makeup, with shoulder pads.

The late 90's seemed to be a move toward simple.

And I think this decade is very simple as well.

Of course - jeans and a tank top or white v-neck t-shirt never go out of style.

And I live in flip flops or bare feet and a bikini- so who am I to judge fashion!

Hopefully the teen phenomenon of thongs sticking all the way out of your shorts or jeans will go!

And these boys who wear their way too large shorts and pants soooooo low that you can see the butt of their underware....and they walk around CONSTANTLY pulling them up - hopefully that will go as well!

I don't know where you all buy clothes, but the few discount places we go, Old Navy, Target, Kohls, etc... feel permanently stuck in a 70's void. Bell bottom low riding jeans (please tell me when these nasty things will finally go away?)

Baby doll shirts, 70's-ish prints, ugh! Thankfully at least shoes are not in the 70's fashion. The only nice stuff I see is in the boys and men's departments. Why or why is women's fashion so awful?

I don't think people wear grunge anymore. We were all wearing flannel shirts and Doc Martens--or else bodysuits and Doc Martens. Oh, and Birkenstocks. No one wears Birks anymore, not even me.

I think lots of piercings and tattoos became fashionable around then--that's still here. And straight hair, and a lot less makeup than people wore in the 80's.

But glittery things were definitely out in the 90's, I think, and now there's glitter everywhere.

Oh--and overalls were popular back then, weren't they? Gah.

I have not been happy with Old Navy for a while. But I buy most of my Old Navy at Goodwill lately. :glare:I have noticed young men dressed very preppy lately. Plaid shorts and two polo shirts. I had to do a double take, I thought I was back in high school (circa 1985).

 Are you insinuating that I'm out of style b/c I wear Birks? I *love* mine and have a brand new pair I just ordered online straight from Germany. Thank.You.Very.Much.:D

I have to imagine the 70s were brought back by people who hadn't worn the clothes the first time.

How many more little polyesters must die before we give up on this awful trend!:willy_nilly:

Not that I'm headed for the cover of Vogue but...wasn't once enough? Couldn't we have brought back some other decade? I could wear a Jackie Kennedy suit or white socks with my rolled up jeans and penny loafers or a flapper dress or even madras shorts with my polo shirt but the 70s? Why?

Stick to classics and you'll never have to worry. I have a basic uniform. Black bottoms...comfy for work and nice for out. Jeans that "I" like. Shirts I stick to a cut that is flattering and colors I like. Usually I will find a shirt I like and then buy it in all the colors I like. Dresses should just be comfortable and in styles and colors that work with you skin tone and body type. I like ones I can just pull over and go...I don't do zippers or buttons really. As far as shoes wear what you like...I think they are a great way to just have fun. I had a green pair of converse all stars and wore them for years...they were sort of my trademark until they had to be sadly retired:glare:

I'm probably stuck in some era, although, I don't quite know which one.

I HATE babydoll shirts (unless I'm pregnant). Have you noticed they look like maternity shirts? Either there are A WHOLE LOT of pg women out there, or they've bought into the hype of the babydoll blouse.

I HATE the layering of a long t-shirt with a cropped sweater/jacket/thing. Ugh! Shoot me and take me out of this misery!

And the bell-bottoms. I think they're starting to go away. Instead, we're now being faced with the opposite... the skinny leg jean. Equally bad.

Finally, skirts. Here's where I'm going to go off... Okay, the style of skirt that is popular is pretty. You know, (I don't know what it's technical name is) the skirt hangs at or just below knee-level, it has a lot of material (in other words, it's not like a straight or pencil skirt). The only problem with these skirts is that ONE type of body can wear them. If you are 5'10" and weigh 105, you can get away with these skirts. Everyone else looks HUGE in them. Now, I am a somewhat small woman - I'm not putting my size or weight, just trust me on this - and I look terrible in those skirts! Please, unless you're built like a twig, don't wear those skirts.

Okay, there's my diatribe on today's fashion.

:001_huh: Nobody likes baby doll shirts? That's all I wear. After getting abnormaly huge with two pregnancies, it's either babydoll shirts or a tummy tuck for me. :)

Baby doll shirts are definitely in right now. Which I think of as a good thing because at least they cover up the muffin tops that usually stick out at the top of those low-rider skinny jeans. :tongue_smilie:

I think any style of jeans is in right now. But the most popular styles are 1) the skinny jeans, which I think look terrible on most people (including myself) but can look really cute worn with a longer tunic-type top, or 2) the trouser-style wider-legged jeans.

I would say that most things made of rayon seem to be out. And that long dresses and skirts are, for the most part, out. Knee length or slightly below the knee seems to be the in length right now (also in are extreme mini skirts, but I doubt too many people on this board are wearing those :tongue_smilie:). And yes, I second the observation that full skirts are definitely in. I think the trick is making sure to wear them with a fitted top to balance it out. In fact, I think that is a good general rule - if your bottoms are on the loose/full side, wear a fitted top. If you wear a loose top, wear more fitted bottoms.

So really, only your dresses (but it's hard to know by not actually seeing the style) are probably out of style, and the rest is probably fine. If you're really worried about it you could try going into a couple trendy shops - like Anthropologie or H&M (although Anthropologie is pretty pricey) to get some ideas. For me, I like to keep about 2/3 of my wardrobe full of "classic" items and the other 1/3 trendier items that I can replace every year or two. I spend money on the classic items and try to find inexpensive trendier items because I know that a year or two from now they will look sooooo "2008" :001_smile:

the pants aren't too low, the shirts aren't too high, the colors/patterns aren't too crazy and the stuff is still pretty stylish. Shop online and you don't even have to go to the mall.
