SheWhoWaits Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 He was hit by a car and taken to the pound. We just found him there and brought him home. His hindquarters seem to be injured and he refuses to eat. We will take him to the vet on Monday, but in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas for getting him to eat? Quote
Kathleen in VA Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 My guess is he's in a lot of pain and doesn't feel too much like eating. I know you can give a dog baby aspirin for pain, but I do not know about cats. Is there an emergency vet in your area? I wouldn't wait until Monday on this one. Quote
Mom2legomaniacs Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Don't give aspirin unless a vet tells you to! Bad outcome from a childhood thing my dad did. Quote
StephanieZ Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 is there a really good reason you're waiting until Monday to see the vet? If you like your cat, that is a really bad idea. Really, really, bad idea. Please get him to a vet ASAP. Surely there is a vet open (most are open Sat AM) or an e-clinic available even if there is not a regular vet open. It would be prudent to take him to an e-clinic *now* and I think it is rather inhumane to wait another 2-3 days. I don't intend to be harsh, but I'd feel crummy if I said nothing and the worst happened when I know what a risk you're running. Kiss your kitty for me. And, do *not* medicate him until he has seen the vet. Don't force feed him w/o your vet's direction, but do encourage feeding and especially drinking. Quote

This cat needs to be seen immediately! any # of things could be wrong, and not only could he be in huge trouble, he could be in tremendous pain--waiting even a few hours could be disastrous for him and you. Also, never, ever give any animal aspirin or any other medicine (but aspirin especially) without a vet telling you to--it is given only for specific instances, and can be very dangerous otherwise. Another no-no normally is tuna--very dehydrating, especially dangerous for males. Chicken baby food in broth is supposed to be the safest thing for cats, and a great cure for diarrhea. Still, I would not offer him anything, in case he needs surgery, just get him to a vet NOW. Quote
klmama Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Your cat is in pain. Eating won't change that, and could make things worse if he needs surgery. Surely there is a vet within 60 miles of you that is open Saturday morning. I'd be making calls right now to find one that is. Most will have answering machines with their hours, and they may even have websites, so you could line up your options tonight. Your cat needs to be seen ASAP. I understand wanting to avoid the fees at the emergency animal hospital, if there is one near you, but your cat is in an emergency situation. He may have internal injuries, as well as the leg. Waiting untiil Monday may be too late. Find a vet to take him to Saturday morning! Praying for him and for you, that all will be well. Quote
SheWhoWaits Posted July 12, 2008 Author Posted July 12, 2008 I didn't mention in my first post that he was at the pound for 2 weeks due to an unfortunate communication lapse (the first time my husband went to the pound, they didn't tell him there were 2 rooms the cat could be in and he didn't find the cat, even though the cat WAS there). So i don't think this is an emergency. He is doing a little better today. I was able to get him to eat some meat drippings from a spoon and he is more lively and walking better. So I think Monday will be okay. Quote
