Ehlers-Danlos or something like it

Recommended Posts

There has been a recent thread about this and it's been on my mind.

It was once brought up by a physician that dd has lax ligaments, possibly caused by a collagen disorder. This contributed to the development of a spinal disorder that was surgically repaired. The doctor recommended we talk to our pediatrician, and we all basically decided not to worry about it because dd had no other symptoms. If anything, it was suggested we could get an echocardiogram to rule out any complications.

Well, last night, dd tells us her knees have been hurting with and after her physical activities for a while. She felt her knee weakness was preventing her from kicking like the rest of the girls on the soccer team, and she admitted she didn't go to the second practice because of this. We knew she didn't go. She was too upset to manage it, but we didn't know why. She also said her knees have been a problem in her martial arts classes. She also says standing still is hard for her. She has to try to bend her knees and move around a bit. I've noticed this in church.

I've looked at the symptoms of EDS and besides some hypermobility, dd doesn't seem to have glaring symptoms. Yes, she developed a spine problem in part because of it, but not much else. But now the knees... It makes me a little concerned. Dh is very hypermobile and he and his mom have had joint issues, so it's likely there's something genetic going on.

We've had so many medical issues, I almost don't feel like I want to face this. Dd is also a little traumatized by all she's been through and has a lot of medical anxiety. Otherwise, she's a pretty tough kid.

Dd will have a well-check in two months. Or I could take her in earlier. Sometimes I feel we've had so many things in the past few years that it's almost embarrassing to go in there again with something...although this isn't exactly new since it's been on the table.

Suggestions? Support?

(Okay, back to cleaning! I am glad I got this off my chest!)

I think I am the person who brought it up -- you will probably want to see a geneticist -- you can PM me -- I don't want to put much more about this on the board. I can tell you though that with my dc who has it, none of it was glaring or obvious. This particular dc was unbelievably athletic - rapelling, mountain climbling, biking, hiking. Foods affect this dc's pain level, and being more active rather than less active is key to management. Also, she takes meds, and the cardiac issues are real and not to be ignored. all that being said, dc is amazingly active and quite healthy.

My youngest has bad hypermobility. SHe has been told she must do exercise every day to not have problems. IT does cause a lot of pain. Dd takes medicines a lot. She subluxates a lot of the time and dislocates occasionally. She does not have Ehlers Danlos but her bone specialist thought that we have a yet undiagnosed collagen disorder that leads to lax joints and also increased fractures.
