Sonlight P4/5 vs HOD LHFHG

I'm wondering which is more appropriate for a 5.5 year old girl. Thanks!

ETA I have the reading lesson, a reason for handwriting, Singapore Earlybird math, sonlight science A (I can save it for next year though if it will be "too much" school)

I cannot afford to buy the books with p4/5. Can I get most of them at the library? Would I only need the instructors guide to get started with sonlight p 4/5?

I looked at both and decided that P4/5 looked better for my son. I think both are gender neutral. The HOD one looked a bit too preschoolish to me, yet my son isn't ready for the read-alouds in SL's Core A. P4/5 has been a good fit so far. We're finishing up week 5, and he always asks to do Sonlight. :D

Of course, another factor for me is that I already had my own reading, handwriting, and math. So activities in HOD would have been superfluous sometimes. I just wanted a bunch of good read-alouds, and that is what I have with SL.

Can I get just the guide for p4/5? I have started hod already and love it but the history is a little much for my 5.5 year old.

So, I have handwriting, math, and phonics already.

Is that what I'd need? Just the guide?

Since you already have Hod, why don't you stick with it? You could go to the sonlight website and print out their booklist and take it to the library. Borrow the books that are available (and that look interesting to you) and call it good. Free and easy.

I know this is what I should do! I need to stay away from this forum!!

P4/5 is kind of a hard one to do with library books because it uses a bunch of books that are read from over the course of several weeks. Also, my library didn't have very many of them.

You can certainly just do library books and call it good though! Actually, you might pick up What Your Kindergartener Should Know, as that has several stories, poems, nursery rhymes, etc. in it. You might be able to find a used copy locally for dirt cheap. That would be something commonly found at thrift stores and library book sales. :) Then fill in with other good library books. Sonlight P4/5 is mostly nursery rhymes and tales from around the world. There is no theme, and you could totally do it without Sonlight and without those particular books.

You can just get the guide. I agree with the others that you don't really need it. You could just use the booklist and the library. The guide helps me stay on track, though. Off the top of my head, I'd buy at least the children's Bible, Uncle Wiggily, The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book, Stories From Around the World, and the Berenstain Bear's science book. Those are all worth owning IMHO and longer reads.

How do you add them in? Just get the list from their site?

I checked my library and they have most of the books. I couldn't find one or two, but fwiw I live in Houston.

Yes. I had actually bought the 4/5 books and guide from Sonlight when my son was that age. I didn't care for the guide and the way the books were scheduled. I sent the guide back and just printed a list of all the books I had gotten (go to their website or catalog) and read one at a time, in the order I wanted, checking them off as we went.

I printed up a similar list for my dd and we just check them off as we go.

HTH!

I found most, but not all the books for P4/5 at my library. Others I borrowed from a friend, and others I decided we would just miss.

I have both, and I am currently using both with my 7, 6, 5, and 4 year olds. They have math language arts and reading at their own skill levels.

There is a list of additional books, by unit, in the back of the hod guide. Many of them are also used in Sonlight at some point. If you use one program all the way through, you'll read most of the most popular titles along the way, just not at the same grade level.

If choosing is an economical issue, stay with what is easiest on your budget. Cathy Duffys books and website can help you chose based on learning styles and teaching preference. She has an online survey that will generate the best choices for your child, with an index of compatibility. I've found it very helpful.

Blessings,

Cathy
