Those who vaulted did a second vault in the preliminary round to attempt to qualify. Makayla Maroney was the only one who did the second vault, so was the only one from Team USA who qualified to compete in vault. Why no one else did the second vault, I don't know. I thought they were trying to conserve their energy and concentrate on preparing for the all-around competition and team competition. As you saw, it's very difficult to train two different vaults from two different vault families. The other girls probably made that decision years ago.
