Nestof3
So, Ben started a fever of 102 on Tuesday. It was high -- getting up to 104.5 until Friday when it dropped to 100. He had a mild productive cough, and had been resting as I don't treat for fever until bedtime. On Saturday, his temp was 99 and he was bouncy and normal with a hint of coughing. My dh had planned a trip with them to go on the river, so they left thinking he was over it. I asked how he was doing over the weekend, and I was told fine. Last night, dh told me he had a fever of 100.6 He was supposed to participate in a Lego summer camp this week starting today, so they are driving home early today. The thermometer is in the trunk, and I don't know if he has a fever. I need to know if I need to make a doctor's appt! What was he thinking to wait until last night to take his temp? Why didn't he check it this morning? I've never had a child sick this long. He also has an area on his back that is very sensitive to touch, and I'm wondering if it could be nerve damage from the accident. He wasn't really jarred much. Thanks for listening. Jen in PA
:grouphug: I would go to the doctor for this. My kids have never had a fever last more than a couple of days, so I am probably being overly cautious. but it can't hurt to go in.
Denisemomof4
The area on the back is concerning but I don't kniw what to do about that. Extended fevers are supposed to be seen. Honestly, nothing has ever come out of a dr appt for us for an extended fever. Still, please take your son in. Since he had a cough, he could have walking pneumonia. My son who used to get that had fevers which came and went. It is normal to wake up temp free and then have the temp creep up in the afternoon. Even dd12 who was hospitalized recently due to severe dehydration, virus and high temp peaks would have much lower temps in the morning. They finally said they wouldn't release her until her temp spikes in the Pm were 100 or below.
Emilylou
Does he have a sore throat? not like strep just sore? Sounds like a yucky bug going around here. Last about 2 weeks. :( I would take him to drs. Both my kids needed a Z Pac to get over it. Hope he is feeling better soon. Being sick in the summer is no fun! *********
Dawn, I'd take him to the doctor. The only time my boys have had an extended fever, it's been pneumonia. Not saying Ben has that of course, just saying he should be seen since he's had a fever so long. I don't know about the spot on his back. If you take him in for the fever, mention that, too. :grouphug:
Nestof3
It's 99.1, so I'll take him in. The area on his back sounds like what I had on my arm, and I think it came from resting my forearm in the desk for so long. It feels burnt just on the surface of skin when touched. It went away. I was wondering if it could have come from lying on the sofa for three days straight.
MariannNOVA
Ask them to do a chest x-ray for pneumonia -- ask them to ask all the lyme's questions and do blood work. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:

I just went through the checklist and looked at photos. I don't remember him ever being in a place to get a tick or taking a tick off him, but he has a spot on his quadriceps that he said he gets when he uses the laptop because it emits heat. He has sensitive skin like I do, so I never gave it a though. I told my husband to take a photo and text it to me. I'll post.

Tess in the Burbs
Just want to tell you I know 3 people now that have had fevers this past month in the area. All had fevers about a week. Otherwise it was nothing. Went away after a week. None had anything serious....just fever.

Denisemomof4
Pediatrician is booked; I'll take him to urgent care. Again, I would call first. 99.1 is really not considered a fever. Our practice AND the hospital don't consider it a fever until it reaches above 100.

Unicorn.
Two of my friend's dc had fevers that came and went like that this summer, then after about a week of being clear, they both developed shingles. I hope it's nothing and he feels better soon.
iquilt
My dd8 started a fever last Monday at 102 - I took her to Urgent care that night for strep test - Wed. she still had a fever so I took her to Ped. - strep test was negative on Thurs - still fever on Thurs but none Fri and Sat - on Sun she had a slight fever, 99.5 so this time it was DH's turn and he took her in - turns out she has a double ear infection and finally got something for it. She is feeling way better this morning.
DianeW88
Any fever that lasts longer than 72 hours without trending downwards needs a doctor's appointment to rule out a bacterial infection. A fever (for an oral temp) is 99.6 or above. Anything less is not a fever. Your doctor will most likely just give him a check-up without any bloodwork, unless he sees something suspicious during the exam. It isn't warranted at this point. Nestof3
Red spot I mentioned is gone. But, I was sent lovely pictures of bad sunburn on legs. They look like a blind person applied the sunscreen. I swear, this is the last time I'm letting him take the boys out of town.
Nestof3
So he was fine on the way home, but this evening, his temperature went from 98.6 to 100.3 in a few minutes. I took him to urgent care. His temp went from 98.6 to 99.1 in a few minutes. It's odd. They took blood work; white blood cells are slightly elevated. X-ray shows possible pneumonia; radiologist will view in the morning. He was prescribed Azithromycin. Boy is that fun giving him liquid! He is too light to be given pill form, so he vomited the first two attempts. Ears show an infection starting to form. sewingmama
Ears show an infection starting to form. I was going to post to make sure you get his ears checked. My DS gets raging, prolonged temps a lot and every time it is a massive ear infection (and he never once complained about the pain till after it was diagnosed ) . Nestof3
I was going to post to make sure you get his ears checked. My DS gets raging, prolonged temps a lot and every time it is a massive ear infection (and he never once complained about the pain till after it was diagnosed ) . Before we went to the doctor, he said his ear felt like it was closing up, but there was never pain -- yet. I grew up with ear infections, and I was so happy my boys had never had one. I actually went deaf when I was around five and needed speech therapy when I was seven. My parents both smoked indoors, so I wondered if that had anything to do with it. And, my mom was from the era when only uneducated women breastfed their babies. :glare:

Nestof3
How is he doing today? He's still sleeping, and I am awaiting the formal radiology results and waiting to see what they will do about this antibiotic. I called over an hour ago. :glare: Thanks! :D PS -- I checked on him many times to make sure he was still breathing -- ugh.
