woolybear Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I wasn't sure which forum to put this in. Does anyone have this card game? It looks very cool and I think my kids would like it, but I have spent so much money recently that I will hold off for now. What I'm wondering is, are these worth the cost? Thanks. Quote
elegantlion Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 My ds and I played our first game the other day. It took me a while to read through and understand the rules, I'm not sure I still understand it all. It was fun. Ds has struggled with his multiplication tables so for us it will be a nice learning diversion. The cards are interesting to read and I think it will be something we will have a lot of fun with once we get through the intial learning curve. It was considered an extra for us this year. I hope someone who has used them for a longer period will chime in. Quote
KAR120C Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I think we've actually had our four decks for about three years! Definitely worth the money. They are good for math, although it took DS about two seconds to figure out that he didn't need to do the figuring to know what was the larger product, unless I required it ;) So mathwise it could be great or could slip through the cracks. The coverage of the myths, though, is excellent (and unavoidable! LOL) -- it's well-integrated into the game, like Achilles has a pathetic defense score without his armor... It's not the complete story, but it's enough to send the kids running to the bookshelf to find out more! :) Quote
JaniceO Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 My boys have a set and love them! It's definitely encouraging my 8 year old to learn his times tables. And they love the various monsters and characters on the cards. They are very much into mythology right now and I believe it has a lot to do with these cards. Quote
woolybear Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 Thanks, everyone. Well, my guys are just recently VERY into mythology,so it sounds like a good investment for us. Quote
abbeyej Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 We've had them for a long time, and still don't "get" the incomprehensible directions. I took them to our home school group and tried to get parents or kids not currently in classes to figure them out (thinking maybe some of those Yu-gi-oh playing kids would have a better understanding), but no. Nobody could figure out the directions. Eventually we did come up with our own method of play (sort of following the directions). I love the *idea*, but I wasn't impressed by the execution. I really wanted them to be fantastic, but I find the design mediocre, and either the gameplay is just poor or it's the directions... But either way, I can't recommend them. The idea is great, but it just doesn't work. Quote

The idea is great, but it just doesn't work. I know what you mean. We have had these for years and at first it was a struggle to understand and remember all the rules while trying to play the game. We figured them out and it got better the more we played, but after a while we scrapped the "official" directions and made up our own. We all enjoyed the game much better then and we still got the facts practice in that was part of the reason I purchased them in the first place. :) The novelty of them has worn off though and we haven't played with them for quite a while now. I still think the cards are cool though. :) Quote
5wolfcubs Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 We have them and like others mentioned, the rules are a little vague. We kind of made up our own. And the kids seemed to prefer reading about the different gods/heros and discussing them (especially differences from having read a lot of mythology) then to doing the math. I need to get them out again as we go into Norse mythology! Quote
