TXBeth
John Punch was the first documented African slave in the American colonies. His 11th-great grandson...1st African American President of the United States. I think it's neat. :)
JoLuRu
How is that? Obama's dad was from Kenya and his mom was white, right?
TXBeth
Yeah, apparently it is actually through his mom. John Punch had a son (also named John Punch) with a white woman (apparently not so uncommon in those days before institutionalize slavery). President Obama's mother is descended from that second John Punch. This is all according to the ancestry.com people who have been researching his lineage for the last two years. Apparently they like to research the heritage of famous people in order to get people interested in genealogy so they will take a peek at their own family histories.
