Just for fun: Do you 'see' particular careers or fields in your kids' futures?

Recommended Posts

Not literally 'see them in their future'. :tongue_smilie:

More like, do you see a particular interest in them or a certain 'bent' they have that kind of leads you to think they might be suited for a career in ____?

And this is just for fun. I'm not asking if you'll be pushing them into a certain career or anything like that. Just wondering if there is anything in particular you could see your kids being good at. :)

DH and I joke that middle DS should be a lawyer, as he sees everything as black or white, and loves to talk and argue.

Oldest DS I could see as an engineer or architect because he is a very strong VSL. He is crazy gifted when it comes to seeing designs in his head.

Not sure about DD yet, but probably something with animals. She says she will be a vet who lives on a farm. :001_smile:

I see something with buildings in ds's future. He swears it'll be architecture, but I could see engineering, construction, or pretty much anything that mimics Lego. ;)

Dd... I have no idea. She will probably have a few careers in her lifetime. Anthropologist, maybe?

I could see my son as an engineer or architect.... esp if Lego is hiring. He is pretty gifted in that area and has the patience to make it all work. :tongue_smilie:

I could see my daughter directing theatrical productions someday. She loves drama and she is kind of bossy. :D

My DSs are both convinced they will get a job as Lego designers.

DS6 - cowboy (seriously)

DD - artist, animal rights activist

DS9 - baseball statistician

But that is all irrelevant. :tongue_smilie: I have already informed them that they are all going to be veterinarians and have a family practice. :D They humor me.

Another option is for the boys to have a vet practice and for DD to go into business with me, opening a quilt shop and tea room.

Oldest Dd an authoress staying up all night and sleeping during the day, because that is when her creative juices are really flowing, that also illustrates her own books.

Ds engineer from birth.

Dd something in a compassionate field, like a doctor or nurse. Or a party planner, I would hire her.

Youngest Dd something outside with plants and never leaving home :001_smile:

Oh, yes. My oldest will do something where he gets to talk and keep a room captivated. Politician, Preacher, Teacher, Tour Guide...I don't know, but he'll be talking... He was maybe 6yo when I snapped a picture of him giving a "lecture" to a group of other kids about dinosaurs at the Childrens Museum. I could see him in the science field too. Science Professor might be his perfect gig.

dd loves to type on computers, work calculators, take notes, etc... She has a strong creative flair as well. I think she'll be some kind of techy-designer...as a hobby, if not a profession.

ds6 will probably be a fireman or a soldier. He wants to wear the uniform. He is a fearless little tyke too. He will, however, be a fireman or soldier who reads the classics.

Anna: I see her as doing something to do with animals (though not a vet since she is really freaked out by blood). She would like to have a career working with horses. :001_smile:

Emma: It's gotta be something gory, lol. She loves anything to do with body parts, animals, surgery, etc. She says she would like to be a surgeon, a vet, or someone who does nails.

Cora: She says she wants to be a dentist, but I see her as an actress. :D

I always thought ds17 would work in the church in some capacity. It was obvious from the time he was 12 or so. He was always advanced in math/science and started heading down the college path into chemistry/pharmacy. But he has detoured and is applying to a private university to become a pastor.

DD13 is very, very visual, is artistic, likes to build things and solve problems. She has a natural ability to work with dd5s physical/occupational therapies. I wouldn't be surprised to see her working in a field like building custom orthotics, building sets for theater or working in PT/OT or the like.

7yo "wants to be a Mommy, midwife, and artist." She would be exceptional at any/all of those. I could also see her in a STEM-type job--good problem solver, good at math, scientific mind.

3yo is musically gifted and with her "good ear" could be good with foreign languages. I can see her being a music performance major, and/or an attorney who's going to sue the defendant 'til they can't see straight.

Professional poker player to support his electronic habit. He might work or consult with youtube only so he can "fix" all their problems. When he's not doing that he will write bilingual manga. He will do all of this from a tiny apartment in Japan where he has married a Japanese woman who will cook him real noodle soup each night for dinner. They will take side trips to Russia, South Korea, and Germany to practice the other languages he knows. Dh and I will meet our first grandchild as we all meet in Hawaii.

Hm. This is a fun thread. I love imagining what DD could be doing in 20 years. (Hypothetically of course. Because in reality, she's actually never growing up. :glare:)

I just asked her. She said: a dance teacher, a dancer, an artist, a musician, a veterinarian, umm... what else is there fun?? :D

She's going to be busy. :tongue_smilie: I could see her doing any of those. I wouldn't be surprised if she pursued something in music, she loves music of all types and enjoys dancing and singing and also creating her own music. Actually, I'd be more surprised if she DIDN'T pursue a career in music at some point. At least a minor in college, or a year in NYC or something, it's always been such a huge part of who she is (yes... even at 6.5...)

She also has an aptitude and interest in foreign languages and other cultures, so, we'll see. I could see her doing pretty much anything at this point, other than a clear preference for music, she finds most subjects interesting and do-able.

Ds (8) has always loved animals. I mean...always. He says he wants to be a zoologist when he grows up. I can see it happening!

However, he also reminds me of my brother...a lot! And my brother is a salesman and an entrepreneur. I can see ds going in that direction as well.

Dd (almost 5)...I have no idea!

I forgot to answer myself!

Link - I've always kind of had in my head that he'll be in the ministry in some capacity. (He has said he wants to be several things - from archaeologist who is also a bus driver, to art teacher, to 'working at ___ with Dad', to lifeguard. )

Astro - something with his hands. Or the guy who walks around and finds sound effects in random things. Or creates them himself. This kid has ALWAYS made sound effects more than he talks. :D (He has no future inclinations. He's my phlegmatic! Though he did say the other day he wants to work at the rescue squad...)

Pink - no idea. Well, part of me thinks it would be cool for her to become a doctor or something in the medical field, but that's mostly because she was in the NICU. I saw how much medicine can accomplish and how it did so much to save her life, and I think it would be cool for her to end up doing something in it. But I don't know that her personality is suited for it... she's a bit of a sanguine. ;) She's been dancing around constantly since before she was born (never stopped moving at least one of her feet, even when sedated after she was born! And in utero - the u/s techs kept talking about her 'dancin' feet' because she was just so all over the place) and she still dances her way out of the room if we tell her to go get something, etc. And she likes attention and sings all the time. So I guess anything on stage would make her quite happy. :D (She has no career aspirations at this time, either - I think even if I were to ask she would stare at me blankly, no idea what I was asking her about! )

Ds 1 will be an engineer. He was building stuff at 3 that had the preschool teacher reeling. My guess is aerospace design, possibly for the military.

Ds 2 I could see in lighting or technical design. He is incredibly artistic, but also amazing at math, and very social (complete charmer with dimples to boot). He could really be anything he wants to be, including a great engineer also, but we'll see where his interests lie.

I suspect that ds8 will be an engineer of some sort. That has been his bend since he was little and he actually talks about it already.

Dd7 is hard to peg down. She is pretty fluttery and doesn't show much interest in anything in particular. She does well in most things, but nothing really shows up as an obvious strength.

Ds5 I'm not sure on yet. He has shown an intense interest in music but I'm not sure how he would make that into a good career.

ET1 - Artist, or Anthropologist, or working in a zoo, or running an animal sanctuary, or any job where she gets to dissect things. Whatever she doesn't do as a career, she'll do as a hobby in her spare time.

ET2 - Host of a fun, educational TV show, or giving lectures, or working in a museum (especially giving classes, tours, educational programs). In his spare time, he'll be in a band (or two), and volunteering with animals.

Dd - She would make a great teacher. She has an outgoing personality and a fine eye for detail (as well as a habit of checking what everybody is doing at all times). She may go into biology just because she enjoys making me squirm by talking about bugs/blood/eyeballs/stuff like that.

Ds - I could see him as a mathematician or a comedian. I told him he could be the Bill Nye of math (make it funny/wacky). He wasn't too sure about that idea, though. :D

I can see my dd being a graphic novel author and illustrator. She has been writing and drawing since she was 3 years old and has never stopped. She is working on 12 stories right now and has an "idea book" full of ideas for many more. In her spare time she draws constantly and she just gets better and better all the time. I really could see her doing this for a living.

I really don't know what the future will bring for my son. His Autism is so severe he only speaks a very few words and doesn't understand a whole lot, but he does love music. He sings a lot and sings in tune too and does the inflections in his voice and everything. I really would love to see him gain a musical skill. I've tried teaching him piano in the past and he just didn't connect with it at all, but I'm going to keep trying. He definitely sings well and loves music and I would so love it if he could do something like that.

My eldest wants to be an archaeologist and I can totally see that happening. She loves history. Alternatively something to do with languages as she has an ear for language.

Not sure about my son. He has an engineering type brain so something in that field would suit him but I could also see him doing something in the entertainment industry.

I used to joke that 2ds was going to be a lawyer because of his penchant when he was small of, if you didn't agree with him, you must not have heard him and he'd repeat his argument for his case. He plans on engineering of some kind

I also teased 2dd that her handwriting qualified her for medical school. ironically, she's working on a pharmD. one of the first questions she was asked at her application interviews was "why didn't you apply to medical school?" she didn't want to do the eight years of medical school.

.

classics uses both history and langauge. advanced classics degrees do archaeology.

1dd is a classics major - her motto was language is a toy. she's a computer geek. (just another language, and easier than any human langauge)

For DS -- he wants computer game design. He is great at math and can sit down and do amazing things with computers with very little exposure. He is flying through his first programming course. He also writes hilarious essays. Definately has a creative flair so we will see.

For DD -- I have always seen her as using mathematics in a very theoretical way. Something rather creative because she is so artistic. Dh just found some accounting :001_huh:courses for her. She can't wait. She loves the thought of how practical they are. I think for her it as a practical way to finance her art.

You need to realize I am an accountant--I have never had a job I really liked. This whole thing is really rather upsetting but at least she can try it now and keep going with her other school. I know she will be really really good at it. It actually suit's her. My orderly and meticulous child. I just never considered it because I dislike it so much. So it looks like I will be teaching what I know best. Can't believe it.

I see Baseball Commentator in DS13's future. He eats, sleeps and breathes baseball and he talks incessantly. In fact, when he's throwing off of his mound or with the pitch back in the backyard he is CONSTANTLY commentating a game that is happening in his head. :001_huh: For about 6 months out of the year I don't understand a word the boy says.

Well, the boys are at the age where they are seriously thinking about this anyway, so it isn't a matter of seeing.

However, I'll say this about the 12 year old who is adamant about trying to get into MIT to study aerospace engineering and math - his first word was "moon" and he was pointing directly at it that special evening when he blurted it out! Next was mamma, then daddy, and then, "Mamma go moon?" was his very next thing. Hmmmm...to that point he hadn't spoken intelligibly yet. From that point on words such as "lunar lander" and "Apollo program" was the norm. When he was 2 years 2 months, he put together a 200 piece floor puzzle of the shuttle and the solar system and proceeded to tell me all of the planets' names and he was spot on...so, I think we knew then that this was his aptitude. He's been studying astronomy and robotics ever since.

Dd5 will be a superhero. She's unstoppable this summer!

Or a banker. That kid finds money on the ground EVERYWHERE we go!!!

But I suspect that she will follow her Dad into science. She seems to be drawn to all things natural: plants, insects, rocks, birds, and ecosystems near and far. She has a good eye for details.

Dd1 will be a comedian.

Or a cat burglar. At age 1, her dad sets her on a chair inside the front door with his keys, and she is coordinated enough to put them in the lock. It's one of her favorite activities.

Or launch rockets into space. She's not necessarily into rockets. She just likes to push buttons.

Or she'll do whatever her older sister does; because dd1 wants to do EVERYTHING her older sister does.

Dd should do something related to medicine. She's always terribly interested when someone hurts themselves and seems a bit disappointed if she thinks you did but you didn't. Even as a baby she found her father's seizures interesting...

Ds needs to go into agricultural science or something. He likes plants but he also likes slowness. I don't know what career paths there are that require slowness. It's a bit weird. I thought small boys always wanted everything FASTER!

Indy has wanted to be an archaeologist since he was 4. He just turned 10 and still plans on it. He says his first dig is going to be in the Gobi because there is so much undiscovered "stuff" out there and after that he'd like to move on to find many of the tombs that are still buried in Egypt and then move on to Italy and help with the excavation of Pompeii. He said he might also be an archaeology professor when he's older. He's rather ambitious. He loves history, especially ancient, and languages. We're doing Latin and Greek this year and he wanted to add French (because Indiana Jones worked as a waiter in Paris during a summer break when he was in college :D ) and Arabic, but I told him we need to hold off until we're a little more solid in Latin and Greek. And until I can find someone to teach him Arabic because I'm pretty sure I can't do that one.

Han Solo is only 16 months, so I have no idea. He adores music though, so maybe something musical.

My eldest wants to be an archaeologist and I can totally see that happening. She loves history. Alternatively something to do with languages as she has an ear for language.

Maybe she and Indy could work together!

I have more difficulty figuring out what the younger one will do. I used to say that he was going to write the next great American novel, but who knows?

Most people assume that Molly will have a career in dog training or as a professional handler on the show circuit, but she absolutely doesn't want that as a career. She says she will always train and show dogs, her own and for a few clients on weekends, but has said for years she wants to be a music director/high school band director. HOWEVER, the more she volunteers with Special Olympics, the more she really is seeing special education as a possible career path. She adores working with her special olympians, and is so compassionate and encouraging yet firm with them. More and more in the last year I really do see it as a possible avenue for her.

Sweet-Pea wants to be an actor. I see the same determination in her that I had when I was her age and my path never strayed too far from that goal. Even though I don't get to do much now, it is still where my passion lies.

Boo-Boo, I have no idea. Out of the two girls, I see her as more likely to be a homeschool mom. However, she also loves theatre and has mentioned wanting to be a vet. She is my wild card.

DD 6 says she wants to be a scientist, detective or archeologist & often ponders specialisations that will combine all three. I'm certain she will perform professionally for a while (maybe only a short stint), either music or ballet. Cannot keep that child off the stage!

DS 3 says pretty run of the mill three year old boy things like "a firefighter". I think he'll end up as an engineer or a sculptor. He makes the most amazing creations out of well, anything he can get his hands on.

I saw engineer in one of my sons by age 2. He's entering a program in engineering this fall. It wasn't my wish or desire--it was just really clear from his behavior. I've got another who I see as likely running a business, and possibly being an engineer. Again, just innate behaviors and preferences. Interestingly, both dh's father and mine are engineers, though those traits seem to have skipped a generation!

DS: I have joked since he was little that he was going to be either a preacher or a politician. That kid really knows how to work a room and connect to people of all ages. He is an "old soul" that just draws people to him. He also has a sharp wit and can be hysterical, plus he is pretty self-assured and confident on stage. He is also a great writer.

DD8: she is very creative and crafty and has her own funky sense of style, so I can see he doing something like jewelry or fashion design, but she says she wants to be a rock star. She has a pretty good voice and loves to perform and be the center of attention, so who knows. She also has a very compassionate, care-giving side and loves kids, so I could see her doing something like nursing or teaching also.

Dd4: She told DH the other day that she wanted to be a bull-rider. My response was. "I feel sorry for the bulls." it does totally fit her personality though. Whatever she chooses, she will be the one in charge.
