*anj* Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I've got someone here cutting down a tree and I want to be sure I'm getting a good deal. Has anyone had a tree removed lately? Quote
Twinmom Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Working on quotes to have the remainder of this tree removed, and they want nearly $3,000! Hopefully, yours isn't so big. :glare: Quote
beansprouts Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I just accepted a quote for $400 to cut down and haul away the wood from a 50 - 60 ft tree. Another service quoted us $700 for the same job. Quote
*anj* Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 Okay, it sounds like we're getting a really good deal then. We're paying $75 and the tree is about 1/3 the size of Twinmom's tree. It didn't occur to me to take pictures beforehand, but I just ran out and took a couple with my camera phone. I'll post them when they reach my email inbox. Quote
bairnmama Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 What do you mean by medium-sized tree? It's really different in different parts of the country. A friend just got quotes for his pine trees in their front yard. We're in eastern NC and the guy wanted $3000 per tree!! So my dh went and did it for them, lol. He said that's usually a sign that the company didn't really want the job and bid extremely high hoping not to get it. He used to do that when he ran his own lanscape company. Quote

Are you keeping the wood or having them haul it away? I paid $100 more to have them haul the wood away. It would have only cost me $300 if they left the wood. Quote
Mom2legomaniacs Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Probably upwards of $500 here. I have heard from that to around $1000 per tree. More if it is taller and harder to get to. Tree work around here is not cheap. Quote

They are friends of a friend, but we hadn't talked about a price prior to this. I'm psyched. We have another tree that needs to come down, but I am going to wait and to that one later because I only want to pay for one at a time. Quote

Maybe you're right that they didn't want the job. Twinmom's tree looks huge. My dh considered cutting the tree down himself, but I have been discouraging it. Last time he and a friend cut down a few dead trees they ended up dropping one on the garage. Besides, I really don't want to see my 300# dh using a way-too-small-for-the job chainsaw 50 feet in the air hanging on to rotted wood on a hunter's tree stand... I am glad he is paying to have it done professionally. Quote
*anj* Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 Yeah, we have two trees in our front yard that are the size of Twinmom's tree, but we aren't going to get rid of them. They need pruning, but we really like those two. They're great for shade. Also, our house is on a busy corner, so when they have leaves they provide us with privacy and they mute the sound too. The one that just came down is a mulberry tree that was a lot more trouble than it was worth. The backyard is sunnier now, which is good. Of course now I'll have to get dh to put a stake in the ground for my clothes line, but that's okay. Quote

I am glad he is paying to have it done professionally. My dh went all over town to find tree spikes, you know the ones that attach to your shoes, to climb the tree. He couldn't find any so he bought angle iron and used his dremmel to cut them into spikes. Then he attached them to his boots with 550 cord, duct tape, and iso mat! Then he used his climbing harness with more 550 cord around the tree and just shimmied up about 60 ft to top the tree. That man has no fear! *anj* - It does sound like you are getting a very good deal. It's nice to have friends with skills! Quote

I think that NC is raking people over the coals as far as the tree removal prices go! What I didn't mention is that the insurance company already paid $3600 to remove the part of the tree on the house itself! The quote I got was for the removal of the rest of it...that's on me, sadly. The trunk part alone on the house weighed 8,000 lbs once they cut off the limbs and used a crane to lift it over my house and onto the street! The tree is a pin oak...somewhere between 100 and 150 years old (we'll know soon enough! Ring count...) and nearly four stories tall. Big 'un. Quote
*anj* Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 These are the branches laying on the ground: This is what was left of the tree after the branches were removed: I used my phone to take those pictures and so I think they're kind of distorted and fuzzy. The tree was about 12 inches around at its base and about 10 feet tall at its highest point. Quote
*anj* Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 Can't see your pics... No way!!! I can see them! Tres bizarre! Okay, I'll try something else later. I've got to cook now. How weird... Quote
