Please include the quanity, frequency, sequence, and when you start/stop each.

Are you a firm believer in copywork? No

Would you do copywork with a dc who is able to write neatly for their age? No (no real reason why, just never did it)

How about dictation? Part of spelling program

Do you combine spelling and dictation? Dictation included in their spelling program

Do you use a spelling program, track words your dc wants to use and is unsure of, or both? Spelling program. If dc finds a word not sure of we look it up together.

When do you begin a formal grammar program? 3rd grade

Do you use a separate editing program? No

When do you start a formal writing program? 4th grade

What would be your main LA's goal for each year?

K : complete Primer work, beginning manuscript

1st : fine tune phonics if needed (ai/ay, etc.), begin A Reason for Spelling A, fine tune manuscript; no writing except for in spelling book

2nd: move to cursive if ready, otherwise continue manuscript practice, Reason for spelling B, light writing (5-word prompts, etc.), alphabetizing/dictionary skills

3rd: cursive, spelling C, slightly more focused writing, introduce grammar (Easy Grammar)

4th: final year of cursive (found old book out of print that is fabulous!), spelling D, Paragraph Series (love, love this program!); Daily Grams for review, Wordly Wise A,B,C

5th: spelling E; writing is focused on rewrites (taking simple work and making it better), editing, outlining, essays, poetry, types of writing; Rod and Staff grammar

6th: spelling F, more in-depth outlining and reports; grammar review

I use the Wordly Wise books for my writing samples: copy a page/paragraph and dc outline/rewrite it. I do grammar focus one year then review the next year; the years we do review are the years I introduce something "new" such as Worldly Wise or Paragraph Series.

Don't know if this is what you were looking for! I'm hoping others will post as I'm interested in what I'm missing. :)

I have a 12, 10, and 6 yo

Are you a firm believer in copywork? Yes.

Would you do copywork with a dc who is able to write neatly for their age? Yes, I think copywork is more important for imparting complicated sentence structure than for handwriting skills.

How about dictation? Yes.

Do you combine spelling and dictation? Yes, I dictate sentences to go with spelling words sometimes.

Do you use a spelling program, track words your dc wants to use and is unsure of, or both? I use a phonics-based, systematic spelling program (Spelling Workout,) and that is all my dc have needed to spell very well.

When do you begin a formal grammar program? When dc are done with phonics, and then we begin with the 3rd grade R&S English book.

Do you use a seperate editing program? No, they edit their own work.

When do you start a formal writing program? Once they are done with phonics.

Would would be your main LA's goal for each year?

K-2: reading, spelling, and handwriting

3-4: Perfecting handwriting and spelling, starting to work on grammar and writing.

5-7 or 8: Finishing up grammar, BIG focus on writing

Thanks a bunch!

Looking back at what you have done, what would you do differently?

I would have been more strict about handwriting early on to form better habits. Other than that, I am very happy with our results so far

Please include the quanity, frequency, sequence, and when you start/stop each.

Are you a firm believer in copywork? Yes, they normally have only done it in K, once writing well I drop it.

Would you do copywork with a dc who is able to write neatly for their age? Nope. I teach cursive early 1st and with the writing we do, it's more than enough.

How about dictation? 4 x's a week during spelling.

Do you combine spelling and dictation? Yes (above)

Do you use a spelling program, track words your dc wants to use and is unsure of, or both? We use SWR, and I have a composition notebook for each child, I put words they misspelled from their writing in this notebook. They get those added to the bi-weekly spelling test AFTER we have gone over the reason of the spelling and they marked them

When do you begin a formal grammar program? I alternate from Shurley English and Easy Grammar-Daily Grams starting with Shurley in 1st.

Do you use a seperate editing program? Nope, they self edit first, then mom pulls out the BIG RED PEN..lol

When do you start a formal writing program? We do IEW from the beginning.

K-Narration with me writing narration down and they do copywork until goal for the end of the year they are writing it.

1st- KWO (from science/history)-narration, they write a rough and final weekly.

2nd-same as 1st with more requirements, do picture writing

3rd-same as 1st, 2nd then add story writing

4th-same as 1st,2nd, 3rd and add summarizing from notes

5th- same as 1st,2nd, 3rd,4th and add Library reports, and slide in Poetry study

I think you get it:D

Would would be your main LA's goal for each year?

Such as:

K reading well, neat handwriting 2-5 sentences copywork by the end of the year, narrations

1st reading well, cursive, KWO, Shurley 1, SWR

2nd fluent reading, continue cursive, IEW (sample sequence above), Easy Grammar/Daily Grams 2,SWR

3rd reading,everything is in cursive,IEW,Shurley 3, SWR

4th reading,IEW,Easy Grammar/Daily Grams 4, completed SWR

5th reading, IEW, Shurley 5, Apples 1 (1 sheet a day, spelling review)

again you get it;)

Thanks a bunch!

Looking back at what you have done, what would you do differently?

Honestly, I would not and have not changed a thing, maybe the consistency has made it work so well. All 3 have taken the IOWAS and they score 1.5-2.0 grade levels above in anything that has to do with language. Language is one subject I don't mess with. It works, it's easy to implement and they don't complain.

Please include the quanity, frequency, sequence, and when you start/stop each.

Are you a firm believer in copywork? Yes, we do daily copywork starting in 1st grade.

Would you do copywork with a dc who is able to write neatly for their age?Yes. They learn a lot more during copywork than just writing neatly. They learn sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, good vocabulary, and much more!

How about dictation? I dictate on Mon. one passage. We correct their errors and discuss them. Sometimes I find grammar pages or whatever to help them understand those errors. They copywork it all week and we do another dictation on Fri. to see if they improve it. Oh, I almost forgot, I also have them write out the rules for their errors, grammar, punctuation, spelling, whatever.

Do you combine spelling and dictation?Yup! We add those words to their regular spelling list.

Do you use a spelling program, track words your dc wants to use and is unsure of, or both?I don't use a spelling program for my dds because they really are natural spellers. But, my ds isn't so we use Spelling Power.

When do you begin a formal grammar program? We begin formal grammar in 4th grade with a good drill book. But, we continue with our dictation and copywork, too.

Do you use a seperate editing program? No, just dictation and copywork.

When do you start a formal writing program? We start a formal writing program in 6th grade. Before that, we do daily journaling and, of course, copywork and dictation.

Would would be your main LA's goal for each year?Honestly, I hesitate to set general goals. Each of my dc have been so different that none of them would have fit into general goals. I would have been discouraged by my ds and I would have slowed my dds down if I would have followed the scope and sequence for LA for our state at the time (MN). I just take it year by year and set individual goals based on their ability.

Such as:

K reading well

1st neat handwriting

2nd . . .

3rd . . .

4th . . .

5th . . .

Thanks a bunch!

Looking back at what you have done, what would you do differently?Again, nothing. I've been really happy with the results so far!

Hope this helps!
