mo2
I want to do a small unit on safety with my 6yo---what to do if we get separated in a store, don't take things from strangers, don't answer the door when mom's in the shower, things like that. Does anyone have any resources to help me make sure I cover all the bases? Thanks

Lori D.
A tour of a fire station and tour of a police station, as they usually bring up personal safety issues. When you call to arrange a tour, ask if they have any free educational materials to hand out, too. And here are some free printable resources: Here's a website with a list of web resources for free, printable materials on a HUGE range of safety topics from the Mississippi Office of Healthy Schools website. It has teaching materials and student pages on: - stranger dangers - bike safety - disaster preparedness - fire safety - pedestrian/traffic safety - Halloween safety - crime prevention/safety - weather safety - healthy habits - food safety - water safety - seatbelt safety - electricity safety - poison safety http://www.healthyschoolsms.org/heal...yresources.htm Here is a website from Education World website with loads of resources for teachers for lesson planning on fire safety: http://www.educationworld.com/a_less...esson026.shtml

Stacia
If you cover fire safety, here's a fun thing we did when my dc were little. I cut 'flames' out of orange felt, then we would stick them all over dc's clothing (a sweater or sweatpant type material seems to 'stick' the best w/ felt). Then, they practiced 'stop, drop, and roll' until all the flames were off (put out). They thought it was fun. Hopefully it was memorable too (if the knowledge is ever unfortunately needed). Actually, thanks for a reminder about covering safety. I may pull out stuff we have & do another round of 'safety' review.
