I have burned out more than once. I think I have a good burnout about every six or seven years.

I recognize it as a feeling that I just don't feel like I can do what needs doing. My creativity is gone, my energy is gone, it is a burden to do anything.

When it hits you look for things to simplify and then you just force yourself to keep going until the feeling passes.

Burnout happens to all of us~

When I get overwhelmed with everything, I take a break from the usual stuff.

ie: cleaning, cooking, laundry, picking up endless amounts of junk that invades my space.....

We do fun stuff, like go to the park ALL DAY.

When it's just way too loud in the house, I take a book or something to knit and the kids laugh, play and wear themselves out.

Or if I just can't muster up the energy to cook, we order $5 pizzas for dinner for a few nights.

We just have to get out of the house, we go to the library and the kids play on the computers that only have access to a few educational sites.

Or we go to the zoo.

Figure out what is triggering you~ constant noise, too much to do in one day, loneliness, etc.

Everyone has the need for breaks.

Let yourself take one.;)

I have been so burned out for the last year. I forced myself to get up, to get dressed, to do school with the kids. . . . (And no, I wasn't depressed - I seriously considered it and asked my dh who is a nurse who really said that I didn't seem depressed in other important ways.) I've been taking iron pills for the last 6 weeks and my "burn-out" is finally going away!!! I'm saying this just to point out that it could be a physical problem.

I just don't feel like doing what I need to do.

Have you known people who have burned out in homeschooling?

How do you keep it from happening?

Well, first of all, you are in a very difficult period with 5 little ones under 9!! So, there is a pretty darn good reason why you might feel tired and unmotivated. All your energy is being sucked up by the little people!!! If homeschooling is a priority to you then I would make sure you are getting a little alone time (everyone in their own rooms for an hour) each day so you have some quiet moments to refresh yourself and energize for the rest of the day. Don't try to do too much, but focus on the basics and on enjoying those little people. Prayers and hugs for you today!! :grouphug:

I have problems feeling this way. Taking a break can be good, if you and your children can get back on task afterwards. My son and I have problems getting back on task after long breaks, so I've been trying to find other ways to work through it/avoid it. Everyone's suggestions are wonderful, and a bit of alone time every day is especially good for me. My son and I took a little nature hike around the neighborhood this morning, and I feel better than I have in awhile about getting into our day. Though with so many children, it may end up being more stressful for you. Burnout does happen to all of us, and it's alright, just don't let it consume your thoughts. :grouphug:

Oh yes, I have experienced burnout many, many times. I don't know if you can prevent it either. It just happens. Homeschooling is tough work, but very rewarding.

I LOVE going to homeschool conferences!! Listening to encouraging speakers and looking at all the cool books and materials really pumps me up for another year!! Also, just getting out of the house alone to read a good homeschooling book or magazine helps too.

Also a nice LOOOOOOOOONG break can help.

Hang in there;)

Oh yes, striking resemblance. Both beautiful women. Very similar hair also. I need a new hairstyle and I think I am going to go for that one this time.

Dawanna,

Does it take you much time to fix your hair? I need something that I can manage easily with very little time involved. Right now it usually just goes up in a ponytail holder.

Do you know who your avatar reminds me of? Lorelai from Gilmore Girls.

Does anyone else see this?

I have heard it, but never I've never seen the show.

It was a good hair day, too bad it's not everyday!!!

Man, you guys are making my day!!!

I haven't had this many compliments since......?

It doesn't take much time.

I wear a ponytail or a baseball hat 50% of the time.

And good shampoo and conditioner is 90% of manageable hair.

My absolute favorite is Giovanni 50:50 shampoo and conditioner.

I also use their hair gel.

You can by them at Whole Foods or at http://www.vitacost.com for 1/2 price.

My hair is thick and wavy, so I just let it airdry for the most part and then add some gel to tame the frizzies or some hairspray to style it.

If I blowdry, it's with my fingers and then I just use my fat curling iron to make big curls around my face. (like forming ringlets)

It's the easiest haircut I've ever had.

I just asked my hair stylist for something low maintenance for wavy hair, she suggested "beach hair". I have no idea if that helps.

I just usually look at magazines 5 min before the appt and find something the length that I want with long layers.

You can't go wrong with that!~

BTDT. Do you think it would be a good idea to get a physical...a "well-mommy" visit? After my recent well-visit, I discovered I was hypothyroid and severely anemic, two conditions that would make one feel very burned out.

Are you exercising? Taking care of yourself spiritually?

I just experienced a severe case of burnout for the past three years. There was a lot going on in our non-homeschooling lives which helped added fire to the burnout. Could you be experiencing many stressful life goings-on?

Praying for you....perhaps it's time for a short break?

Blessings,

Camy
