Mrs. Readsalot Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Happy day our local library book sale is quickly approaching. Usually I head straight for the children's books. But this year I need a new plan. My son is getting older and we have more than enough books around for him to read(note he is not a big reader) But now where do I go first....history(we love history)....DVD's that might be a good place to start as they usually go fast.....Best sellers I have a few I would like to find....Oh dear what a dilemma. So what is your plan of attack at a libray sale? Oh I am usually one of the first in line. Quote
JFSinIL Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 The table with the big art books and other slightly more $$$ books. I have to muscle the ebay re-sellers out of the way but tend to find one or two gems that I otherwise would not be able to afford. Quote
Shenan Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I head straight to the section with my most 'wished' for items. One time it was movies, another was the childrens sections, another was historical, and yet another time I headed for the magazine's. Then I meander around awhile until I lose my patience. (I usually have 6 kids in tow with me):D I have a friend who looks for hidden treasures! You know, the books that are worth $$$$$thousands!!!:) She has found quite a few hidden treasures over the years.;) Quote
E_Edgerton Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Oh, the book sale...it is probably one of my favorite things to do each week. I get there early. Usually just as one of the lovely ladies is unlocking the door. I help set up a little and they sometimes will reward me with a freebie...but as for strategy...I do make a list of books I want to keep an eye out for, or at least authors that I am interested in. So, I start with newer donations, on to coffee table books, bios, eduction, and then to children's book. Ours has picture books and chapter book seprate. I do picture first and then move on the scan the chapter. Well, I guess what I am saying is that most importantly is a list of ideas because the book sale makes me so happy that it can be sensory overload if you are not careful. Good luck, glad to see someone loves the lib. book sale as much as I do. :) Quote
PrairieAir Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Watch out for those Mennonite women! They look so nice, but they can be feisty and they take their book sales seriously. They are on a mission and you'd best not get in their way. Also watch out for pervs that like to press against you and pinch your bottom in the crowd. MIL had one guy follow her and do that continually at a library book sale. He would pinch her butt and quickly turn the other way or disappear. She finally figured out who it was and went to find dh, but he must have figured out what she was doing and hightailed it outta there. Quote
Ali in OR Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Definitely still in the kid book stage here. But older kid lit now, no picture books! Younger dds were old enough this year to search on their own with their own bags. I bring a list of what I need for history, but there's no time to consult it while searching. Basically if I've heard of the book from here or other home school circles, it goes in the bag. Then we spend some time going through all of our bags and putting back a few we don't really need. I love library book sales! I can only dream of someday making it back to the adult section. Quote
Tammyla Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Tell you MIL to smile, make eye contact & step on his foot a few times. Those pinchers get the message real easy that way. My plan is to have a wish list and make a speedy walk to that spot and then quickly go around the entire sale. Have fun...I love a good book sale. Watch out for those Mennonite women! Sharon H in IL Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I rush to see if they have any Teaching Company materials. I nabbed some economic tapes and history ones at the last museum booksale. (That's our local big booksale.) These are for me, and as far as I'm concerned they are gold, so everything else is an extra. :) I would go to children's next, but if I were done with that, I'd zoom to history. I'd scan for classic titles, then eras we're going to study soon, and finally go general, looking for things we might be re-studying later. Everything else I'd take at a leisurely pace. Quote
ereks mom Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 EK always goes with me, and sometimes ER & dh go too. EK looks in the kids' fiction & classic literature sections for Newberry winners & classics. ER looks in science & science fiction. Dh looks in religion & theology. I look in the history and textbook sections. Our library has a big library fair and used book sale every September. This is a BIG event for our little town: they block off the streets near the library and set up carnival games, rummage sale tables, bake sale tables, food & drink stands, and of course, the used book area. They invite local talent to perform: singers, dancers, cloggers, magic shows, etc. This is the library's main source for raising funds; all proceeds go for buying new books. The children's librarian has asked the homeschoolers in the community to let her know if there are any books that they'd like her to order with the funds her department gets. Quote
