profmom
I have thought about organizing our books into an app or software before, but I think I might really be ready to do it this summer! I'd like to be able to scan the bar codes for quick entry. Anyone do this? What did you use? Has it been worth the effort?

marbel
We use Readerware. I love it. A lot of our books are in boxes; we moved to a much smaller house with not much bookcase room. I can find anything easily because it's inventoried to its box. (Or shelf, we at least have a few shelves.)
Murmer
I love bookcrawler! It lets me do multiple tags so I can say if a book is used on more than one book list or recommended for more than 1 age or topic.
K&Rs Mom
I have an app called Home Library that was probably 99cents. It's okay, especially for the price. What I love is that you can just scan book barcodes: it makes the entry process really fast. But it can't find everything, especially older books or from independent publishers (like many homeschool texts). It has categories, which I haven't really used, and you can scan CDs & DVDs & video games, and list other "stuff" in their own categories. profmom
Thanks guys! I'll check into these! Has anyone already compared a few and chose one over the others for specific reasons? Are there any features that I need to be sure to have? Do all of these have the ability to be accessed on different devices and computers? PeterPan
I use Readerware. I've used it for, well, about 7 or 8 years now. Lots of others have come out in the meantime. They all work. Just make sure of whether you want it online and viewable to others or on your computer and totally private. Figure out if you want it to sync with devices (iphone, etc.). I want for others in my house to be able to access it from their computers or i- devices too, so I'd either want an app that allows us to share access or online access. I want to be able to input books by scanning them with my iPhone. I'd like to be able to categorize the books by subjects and curriculum. Are there any that you guys would say would or would not work based on those criteria?
PeterPan
I'll give you a bump here and toss out a couple more things. If it's *software* that you store on your computer, then you have the issue of backing up the data. If you have a server at your house, that's not an issue. Are you *sure* you want everyone to be able to enter from their computer? What if they screw it up and delete 100 books? Seriously, I can envision that happening with the software I use. I'm just kinda protective, kwim? All the books go through me when they come in the door, I enter them, and then they can go to their locations. That's what we do. It sounds like you're going to be happier with some of the online options that use the cloud. Then you'll be able to pull the data up in lots of locations and not have to worry about storage. Bug Karenciavo and see what she's using. She just mentioned some software somewhere, and I thought it looked good. I just didn't save the info, as I didn't need it. MomatHWTK
Librarything is online, you can scan in titles using a bar code scanner and you can add "tags" to sort.
AmyontheFarm
Is there a way to use my ipad to "scan" the bar codes and input the book title easily? If so which programs will I need?

profmom
ProfMom, what did you end up using? I'm finally getting to this project and am using the Book Crawler app! 150 books scanned so far -- I need to speed up, but I think it'll be great in the end! Suzanne115
I've been doing this the past few weeks. Someone on here recommended Readerware. It is super easy to use. Suzanne
