sunnylady303
6YO DD has had bleeding in her stools the last 4 days. Is this concerning? No constipation or any other signs. Should I wait and see or go to the doc? Any thoughts?
Chris in VA
YES. Take her in. What are you waiting for?
Parrothead
This needs to be seen about very soon.
sunnylady303
YES. Take her in. What are you waiting for? It's only a little bit of blood. And I thought that could be caused by pretty innocuous things. And I am reluctant to expose my DD to doctor's office germs unless I have to because she has significant lung issues. That's why I was waiting. But maybe I won't wait.
ReneTL
This is a really stupid question, but has she been eating a lot of watermelon lately? I only ask because sometimes it can look like blood in a stool. ETA: If not, I would definitely take her in.
sunnylady303
No. No watermelon. And it was definitely blood. I don't want to talk about how I know but it was. Ah. The joys of motherhood.
Chris in VA
Sorry--I didn't mean to be rude. :grouphug: It can be a sign of internal bleeding, even if you are only seeing a little. Having just dealt with a teen who lost half her blood and nearly died due to Crohn's disease, I'm a little cautious. Her's started off as "only a little," too. Could be from a hemorrhoid or a fissure, could be Crohn's--my point is that you really don't know, and waiting is not wise. IMO, of course. I'm in the better safe than sorry camp most often. Thanks for explaining. I figured it was motivated by concern. :) We have an appointment in 30 minutes.
sunnylady303
Is her stool really hard or is she having to strain? Could be something like that. It could be hemorrhoids. And no. It's soft and normal. No straining.

Lolly
Bright red? Fresh looking? I would probably wait a bit. Most likely from a fissure or hemorrhoid. Btdt.
Harriet Vane
Take her in asap.
Katy
At that age it's probably a polyp, but it could be a sign of sexual abuse or something serious such as an autoimmune disorder or cancer.
Terabith
I would guess that the odds are about 99% minor fissure and 1% something serious. Not a bad idea to have her checked, but I really wouldn't worry about fresh blood.
swellmomma
I would have been at the dr 3 days ago. 1 day could be a small tear or hemeroid, 4 days is time too many. Is the blood bright red or darker? Color of blood give an indication of where the bleeding is coming from.
Terabith
You're not nuts to be worried. It is a cause for concern. But it's not cause for PANIC, if that makes any sense. She is PROBABLY fine. If she has a fissure or tear, that can take a few days to heal. But she it's possible that it's something serious. Take her in, but don't panic. That's my advice anyway. :grouphug:
sunnylady303
Yeah see this is why I tend not to ask for medical advice on-line. You get extremes. Either you are ridiculous for worrying or your child is on her death bed. Geesh. No kidding. But it made me take her which I needed to do but like I said I tend to worry about germs - we've been in ICU too many times from something we picked up at a doctor's office. Anyway. The doc was concerned, not panicked. The blood was not bright red, but more of a burgundy, indicating blood from higher up. We're doing a stool culture which will take a week or so (once we get it :001_huh:) and if it's clear she'll see a GI doc and get a colonoscopy. Thanks for the advice. And we'll just pray it's nothing serious. We've had enough of that.

Have funny getting that stool sample :D

I hope the stool test gives you good answers on the cause. :grouphug: Edited July 24, 2012 by LifeLovePassion
