JaneGrey Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 FYI, the original McGuffey readers are available online free for download at Project Gutenberg. For example, here's the second reader: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/14668 I love free. Quote
Sixmeadows Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 and I think it is also the older one. I like it because the type is more pleasing to the eye. Cheri Quote
hillfarm Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Irrelevant information: The McGuffeys were real people. I grew up in a log home that was once part of the McGuffey settlement. It was the last one standing. The Author McGuffey's sister-in-law scratched her initials into one of our window panes to assure herself that her engagement ring stone was indeed a diamond. That window glass is still there. The cabins were located in southwestern Ohio along the Little Miami River. Quote
Peso Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 the John Wiley & Sons version, which I bought before I even knew I would homeschool! I like it a lot, nice illustrations and fun to use as for read aloud practice. HTH - Penny Quote

JaneGrey Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 The ones at Gutenberg appear to be the Revised ed. by John Wiley & Sons. (Didn't say so til I opened one. I haven't opened them all.) To answer your question, here's a brief comparison from an Amazon reviewer: http://www.amazon.com/McGuffey-McGuffeys-Eclectic-Readers-William/dp/0880620145 Here's a lengthier discussion of the different versions: http://wtmboards.com/K8currJan052007/messages/1877.html Quote

melmac Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 we've been using them online for a long while, but I really prefer to hold the book in front of me or my dc, but wasn't sure which set to go with. :) FYI, the original McGuffey readers are available online free for download at Project Gutenberg. farmwife Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I would prefer the Mott Media version but bought the 'cheaper' ones on Amazon. I really wish I had spent the extra money for the higher quality, older version from Mott Media. http://www.mottmedia.com/pages/publications.asp?Pub=mcguffey Ruth Beechick also published a book (Parent-Teacher Guide for the Original McGuffey Readers) that correlates with the Mott Media ones, they don't work with mine. :glare: Quote
melmac Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 I'm genuinely interested in why you feel the way you do. Would you please expand on why you wish you had gotten the Mott Media set instead of the other one? I'm sure your answer would be valuable in my decision making. Thanks! Would you please expand on why you wish you had gotten the Mott Media set instead of the other one? I'm sure your answer would be valuable in my decision making. Thanks! My number one reason is that I would love to use the guide book that Ruth Beechick wrote, unfortunately it doesn't correspond well with the revised version. My number two reason is that I feel the amazon version (or whoever publishes it!) is of lower quality than Mott Media. They still work but I prefer the overall look and quality that Mott Media produces. I found a picture of each to give you an idea. I just wish I hadn't. ;) Quote
VaKim Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 I have only used one of them, a long time ago, but the one thing I read over and over about them was that the newer ones were more watered down as far as moral teaching and Christianity is concerned, and tend a bit toward more modern views of things. I think the Mott is a reprint of the older versions, if I am remembering correctly. Quote
