S/O Does anyone actually enjoy going to the dentist?

Recommended Posts

I'll admit it. I like going.

I wonder how much our childhood experiences factor in - I feel terrible for Chucki and her violent tooth extraction. When I was growing up we went to a pediatric dentist every six months. Their waiting room was filled with fun toys and a little house we liked to play in. The room where we had the work done was decorated and interesting to be in. When we finished we got to pick a big sticker and we got to pick a prize from the treasure chest. My sister and I loved getting "dentist rings".

Even though I had a number of cavities as a child I still enjoyed going and I really liked our dentist. I still like going. In fact, our current dentist is a homeschool friend of mine so dh and I and the kids see them socially as well.

Does anyone else like going to the dentist?

I love going to the dentist. We go twice a year for cleaning, but I have been toying with the idea of going three times a year.

That said - I have had major jaw surgery and do struggle with keeping my mouth open and I am so sore for a few days after a dental visit. I adore my current dentist and his staff! But I have had terrible experiences in the past that left me very scared of the dentist. My current dentist knows my limits and is so kind, I get warm fuzzies thinking about his practice. Crazy, I know.

My dentist offers nitrous. It's already in my chart that I have a high tolerance and to crank it way, way up. So, it's kind of a feeling I never get to experience at home

But I DO know what it's like to be tainted by a horrible dentist. I had an eating disorder as a teen (competitive figure skater and my coach told me I wasn't small enough) which caused some cavities and a horribly cruel dental assistant change my mind forever. Until I met my current dentist. SEriously I never thought I could bare a dentist again but he is wonderful.

I despise the dentist!!! Just went there today for my 6 month check up and it reinforced how much I hate the dentist. In fact, I'm going to look for a new one because I refuse to go back to this guy.

It could go back to childhood. I needed a lot of fillings and was pretty traumatized by the dentist I had back then.

I loved going in for a filling yesterday. The discomfort of the anesthetic shots and mouth brace, the humiliation of two nice people peering into my mouth for twenty minutes, the bone-shaking buzz of the machine drilling into my tooth, the smell of pulverized tooth enamel, the drooling numbness and inability to talk, and the unbearable stabbing ache when the anesthesia at last wore off were all well worth the sixty-four dollars I paid for a morning of fun.

I didn't even get a token for a toy at the end.

LOVE the dentist! It's the highlight of my year! Or the highlight of my twice a year, as it were! :tongue_smilie: I've never had a cavity and apparently my teeth are in great shape because the dentist and hygienist always go on and on about how they can't believe how healthy my teeth are, given my age (I choose to ignore that part LOL). They are shocked that I still have two baby teeth and that they are healthy too. My trips to the dentist make me feel so...responsible and healthy, I leave walking on air. And last time, three separate people in the office complimented my sandals. So, yeah, I love going to the dentist.

I never had wisdom teeth either. :D

I don't love going, but I dont dread it either. For me, it's more about the hassle of finding someone to watch the kids adjust taking the time to go that's the biggest pain. My dentist is the king of numbing and anesthesia so I don't have any pain when I go. My kids love the dentist, but they have just had cleanings so far.

Not me. I actually have a very nice hygienist, and my dentist was wonderful - he just retired though, and I haven't met his successor yet; but I hate the physical feeling of the scraping and polishing. Getting a root canal and a crown was one of my worst experiences ever. I'm always thankful to be done.

I generally like it. I've had a few bad dentists, however, that have make me wary of the quality of care I'll receive. One was just not very nice and rough and another actually caused damage to my teeth. If the dentist is good, I'm pretty happy during the cleaning and any treatments I may need. I don't mind the experience and love the results.

I just had my first root canal. I didn't enjoy that.

Normally, though, I don't mind it at all. I have a high pain tolerance and don't get anesthetic for normal fillings, so it's pretty quick and easy. My friend's daughter my new hygienist, so that was a bit of a laugh last time.

I hated the dentist. Nitrous didn't help because it caused me to have panic attacks and the dentist would never believe me that it made things worst.

My middle dd thinks going to the dentist is actually fun.

My oldest is okay with the dentist.

My youngest doesn't like it much, but she manages to deal. She's had a pretty rough time. She had 11 of her baby teeth pulled (5 at 7yo, 4 at 9yo, 2 at 11yo) to make room for adult teeth and she was in braces for 2.5 years.

Dh and I are going to the dentist regularly now, but when we moved, neither one of us went for about 6 years. I did take the kids every 6 months during all of that time though.
