Using only biographies for first grade american history...your favorites???

Jean Fritz's books: And Then What Happened, Paul Revere? Will You Sign Here, John Hancock? What's the Big Idea, Ben Franklin? Why Can't You Make Them Behave, King George? Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams?

 

And after I read these to my daughters, we took a field trip to Williamsburg...on the bus...from San Diego...:D

My ds really enjoyed Squanto and Benjamin West too. We're reading Ben and Me this year, as well as the Wright Brothers. Here are some others.

The Rainbow Book of American History (Daugherty) is beautiful.

 

Depending on his reading level, he may be ready for COFAs (Childhood of Famous Americans series).

The Flag Maker by Bartoletti - it's the story of the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key so not really a biography but very interesting

 

Sequoyah: The Cherokee Man Who Gave His People Writing

 

Boss of the Plains by Carlson - the story of the inventor of the Stetson

 

Marvelous Mattie: How Margaret E. Knight Became an Inventor

 

I Could Do That: Esther Morris Gets Women the Vote

 

Henry's Freedom Box by Levine - there is another version of this story that recently came out but don't get that book because it is awful and not true

 

Duel of the Ironclads: The Monitor vs The Virginia - my son really loved this book

 

Thunder at Gettysburg

 

Buffalo Music by Fern - based on the actions of Mary Ann Goodnight who made great strides in saving the buffalo from extinction in the 1800s

 

Snowflake Bentley

 

Magnus at the Fire - about a horse that was retired from fire service. I thi k this one was true but I can't remember

 

Togo by Blake - about one of the dogs that did the famous serum run in Alaska

 

These aren't biographies but are good historical fiction

Sarah Morton's Day and Samuel Eaton's Day about Pilgrim life. There is a Native American one also but I don't remember the name

 

John, Paul, George, and Ben - my son loved this book

 

Cocoa Ice - this is another one that my son loved

 

Sky Boys: How They Built the Empire State Building

 

The Unbreakable Code -502 about the Navajo code talkers during WWII
