Ellie
Jean Fritz's books: And Then What Happened, Paul Revere? Will You Sign Here, John Hancock? What's the Big Idea, Ben Franklin? Why Can't You Make Them Behave, King George? Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? And after I read these to my daughters, we took a field trip to Williamsburg...on the bus...from San Diego...:D

PeterPan
Truthquest has fabulous book lists. The Rainbow Book of American History (Daugherty) is beautiful. Depending on his reading level, he may be ready for COFAs (Childhood of Famous Americans series).
hellen
The Flag Maker by Bartoletti - it's the story of the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key so not really a biography but very interesting Sequoyah: The Cherokee Man Who Gave His People Writing Boss of the Plains by Carlson - the story of the inventor of the Stetson Marvelous Mattie: How Margaret E. Knight Became an Inventor I Could Do That: Esther Morris Gets Women the Vote Henry's Freedom Box by Levine - there is another version of this story that recently came out but don't get that book because it is awful and not true Duel of the Ironclads: The Monitor vs The Virginia - my son really loved this book Thunder at Gettysburg Buffalo Music by Fern - based on the actions of Mary Ann Goodnight who made great strides in saving the buffalo from extinction in the 1800s Snowflake Bentley Magnus at the Fire - about a horse that was retired from fire service. I thi k this one was true but I can't remember Togo by Blake - about one of the dogs that did the famous serum run in Alaska These aren't biographies but are good historical fiction Sarah Morton's Day and Samuel Eaton's Day about Pilgrim life. There is a Native American one also but I don't remember the name John, Paul, George, and Ben - my son loved this book Cocoa Ice - this is another one that my son loved Sky Boys: How They Built the Empire State Building The Unbreakable Code -502 about the Navajo code talkers during WWII Uncle Jed's Barbershop
