affordable keyboard options for beginner piano lessons...

I'm asking for a family member, but also hoping to make this purchase ourselves in the next year or two.

Does anyone have suggestions for a keyboard to buy for someone with a very tight budget? Or suggestions on what features to look for? I want a full length keyboard but beyond that I am not familiar as we had a regular piano when I was a kid.

:bigear: I'm interested in this also.

I know that it's important to have weighted keys. I'll be purchasing a smaller version, either 48 or 61 keys, soon. A local music professor, who runs the teaching program at my university, said that this should be enough to get DD through a couple years of beginner lessons. I'll be saving up for a full size digital piano until then.

But of course, I'd prefer to get the best thing for DD to be learning on until then.

I am not sure what your budget it but here are some suggestions. First, get a touch sensitive, fully polyphonic keyboard. If you have to get a smaller instrument (61 keys?) it is worth it vs spending for a complete 88 keys that is not touch sensitive/polyphonic. If you can afford to get it look for weighted keys as well. Yamaha is an excellent brand for quality. good luck shopping!

Oh, we have had good experiences with musiciansfriend.com but even Best Buy can carry good options.

:iagree:

Also, what you are looking for is often referred to as a "stage piano". This could help in your searches.

A couple Christmases ago, I got a Casio Privia PX-130 with stand, pedalboard and bench for $550 shipped from Best Buy. They don't have it any more unfortunately. The best price I can find on it now is here:

Stage bundle:

http://www.kraftmusic.com/casio-privia-px-130-digital-piano-home-essentials-bundle.html - without 3 pedal option

with 3 pedals (The one my son has): http://www.kraftmusic.com/casio-privia-px-130-digital-piano-complete-home-bundle.html

There is a similar Yamaha model: http://www.kraftmusic.com/yamaha-p-95-digital-piano-black-complete-home-bundle.html

My ds uses it the Casio his personal piano and likes it just fine. He is 18 and has played (seriously) since he was about 8.

I'd go for a digital piano vs a keyboard. In general, keyboards have bells and whistles you don't need to pay for, and digital pianos have a closer approximation to an acoustic piano. I like Yamaha over Casio, personally. Costco usually has really good bundles in the fall when they start stocking gift items.
