pulling kids from p/s in march... then..

Recommended Posts

I'm asking on behalf of a friend who has not homeschooled before but is thinking to for her daughters soon. Her oldest will be 5th grade this fall and the second daughter will be in 3rd.

If you were to take your children out of their public school in, let's say, March or April and then travel overseas to visit family for 2-3 months, what would you do to finish out their school year?

I suggested she look into unit studies and incorporate the country they will be in. She could consult with the teachers regarding what concepts are left in math to be sure to teach those (i know 5th grade does mixed numbers, adding/multiplying fractions late in the grade level).

What would you do?

I did exactly that when we ended up pulling ours out of school. I attempted to "homeschool" right after they were pulled out but found that they needed a period of time with out school so that they could adapt. I would just push reading tons of books and nothing else.

eta: in our state most of the teaching is over by then and they are focused on standardized testing only. There was nothing missed.

If I was pulling them out to travel I would consider the school year done and then focus on the travel not school. Visiting museums and other attractions of the area etc all teach. Not doing formal academics for 2-3 months while learning through life will benefit rather than hinder the kids long term imo

Me too. Travel = school! I would just start new this year, wherever we needed to be. Challenging, but not overwhelming.

We have done exactly that this last March. The only thing we have kept up a little was math. We let them decompress and relax and now that it is July I can see a definite difference in our son (will be 6th grade). He is much more relaxed and ready to learn.

Our daughter will be in 4th grade and spent the last 5 weeks in Germany with Grandma. Between language, culture and being away from us over an extended period of time I think she is doing enough.

Are they going back to school in the fall, or will she homeschool them then?
