langfam
Dana Mosely is an excellent teacher, but I've read such bad reviews about the textbook. Those of you whose dc had gone through the goemetry course, how was it to get through the text? TIA:)
CAMom
I wasn't aware that the text has gotten poor reviews. We went through Chalkdust geometry with no problems. My son scored an average of about 95% on the tests.
Hoggirl
Chalkdust now has a "newer" Geometry program that uses a different book. I am not sure if you are talking about the "old" book or the "new" book. We went with the newer program. There is a discussion of the differences between the textbooks on their website (somewhere...but I can't recall exactly where???). We will start Geometry this fall, so I am not much help.
langfam
Thanks! That's good to know. I was worried it was a difficult text to get through. The reivews I read were on Amazon (just for the textbook). OH nevermind, I see they have a new text!! Thanks Cynthia!!
langfam
Oh dear, new text has bad reviews too. Maybe I shouldn't place too much emphasis on what a few college students have to say.
CAMom
Wow...those are negative reviews. ;) That is definitely the book we used. Our experience was not the same as the reviewers'.
Veronica in VA
My ds went through the Chalkdust geometry (the old one) with no problems. He received a B in the class, I think. I did lend it to a friend whose daughter couldn't get through it, but I think that was more an issue about watching the videos than the text itself. since my dd doesn't like to watch videos much either, I opted to sell it and got something else instead. I really didn't see any issues with the text - I thought it was fine. HTH, Veronica

Michelle in MO
I did not like the Larson text at all, because I was used to a very thorough approach to algebra with Lial's. However, I would have to say, after my oldest successfully completed a year of geometry using the older text, that Dana Mosely's teaching was excellent and we relied much more on the DVD's rather than the text. My daughter ended up with a B+ or A- average in geometry using Chalkdust. I still prefer the Lial's texts; the Larson text for geometry is pretty succinct, but if your dc carefully watches his/her lessons with Chalkdust, he/she will do fine. HTH! Michelle in AL
My dd just finished the geometry course. IMO there's no way you could just get through the course without Chalkdust, because many of the problems that are in the text don't have adequate instruction. My dd did well, and received an A, but she is one of the few who doesn't like video teachers, so she didn't get as much out of it as she could have had she paid closer attention. I would rather go for a course with a good text and good instruction whether by DVD, written material or computer CD.
Hoggirl
I am curious as to what the complaints are! Thanks.

Michelle in MO
who didn't like the Larson (Chalkdust) text at first; it's still not my favorite math text. However, don't give up on the Chalkdust geometry program altogether! We ran into a snag in Chapter 8, but then I started re-learning geometry along with my oldest, and I found out a few things that she wasn't doing properly. I taught her to take notes as she watched the Chalkdust lectures, and I also was more careful to make certain that she was really learning the material. I would say that the strength of Chalkdust (at least, for the traditional geometry program) lies in Dana Mosely's teaching. My oldest did fine, just watching the lectures. We used Lial's for Algebra I and Algebra II, so I prefer the layout of these two math textbooks. However, Chalkdust is a good program and my oldest, who is not a math whiz, still came out of it with a B+ or A-. HTH!
langfam
Thanks for the reassurance. Dana Mosely is a wonder and I know he's the main reason the program works. I did find one good review which does say it's a challenging, rigorous course. So for those of you whose dc have completed it....congratulations!! http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?ean=061864525X
HollyinNNV
Thanks for linking to the reviews. This was my favorite part: "As a result, students will fail miserably, along with angering frustration, and discontent wonderment over what purpose geometry may ever serve toward a real-life career. Perhaps trying "Geometry for Dummies" by the infamous IDG publishing company would be a much suitable levelage to this otherwise detrimental book attempting to teach an important equation to the universe of mathematics." :scared: I've been following this thread because we are about to buy Chalkdust Geometry, too. Hopefully it will provide dd with suitable levelage to the universe of mathematics! Holly:lol:
BeckyFL
Their complaint was that in that particular course, the lessons did not go along with the text. Is that the case?
