Anyone here use all levels of AAS?

I know that AAS will be coming out with Level 7 soon ( does anyone know when this will be?)

But is there anyone here that has used all six levels?

Were your children good spellers in the end? I'm just curious as to where this will lead us.

We've been on a two month hiatus having had to take our youngest out of town for surgery this summer. So I was close to finishing Level 1 with my 5 and 9yr old before we had to leave in May.

I'll be finishing Level 1 and then get into level 2 with them both. I'm most sure that my 9yr old will work through this quicker than the 5 yr old. I'm hoping this will help with her spelling as she likes to spell how she says words (she has speech issues).

But I'm wondering how those that have used all the levels have faired out, or if there is even anyone on here that has actually done all 6 levels yet.

Well, we're starting level 5 and I have 6 on the shelf that I found used so thought I'd get it while I could. DD is an excellent speller - 99th percentile consistently on WCJ/Stanford. Honestly, I don't think that's entirely the program but I have been pleased with it and have been able to modify it to suit her. I'm using it with dd6 and don't plan on changing. Not sure if I'll do level 7. I'd like to move onto vocabulary.

My son and daughter started out 2 years behind grade level, and 3 years later are still 2 years behind grade level. :crying: The first few levels are fantastic and I would not dream of using anything else, but at some point it shifts from being rules based to just memorizing. They ace the lists but spell similar words wrong. I started pulling words out of my kids writing and making a list. My oldest was doing Spelling City with them, then something happened that really embarrassed him regarding his spelling and he really started making an effort. He also started using spell check to help him figure out how to spell each word. He did not look at the suggestions until he tried a bunch of times to change the spelling. I noticed a huge improvement after that. I know that is not what everyone wants to hear. Sorry. :blushing:

(My third born is using AAS 1 alongside the AAS readers, with her dyslexia tutor and it is going fantastic.)

We used all six levels. The program was a good fit for my daughter, who is not a natural speller.

At some point during level 6 we knew it was time to move on. After finishing 6 we switched to Spelling Wisdom Book 2. When 7 comes out I might consider it, but Spelling Wisdom seems to be a great fit right now.

No regrets using All About Spelling. :001_smile:

My oldest dd has completed through level 6. She will go through level 7 whenever it is released. My 2nd dd is about halfway through level 6. I absolutely love AAS! I love how easy it is for me to use and I love the results! I love the rules, the review, and the dictation. I love how i can adjust the program for each child at anytime. My oldest was having a lot of trouble with spelling and I switched her to AAS around 4th grade, I guess. She REALLY needed this approach and it has helped her a ton. My 2nd dd is really a more natural speller, but I think it has been good for her, too. I plan to use it all the way through with all of my children. My ds just finished Level 3 and I expect to start my next dd on AAS 1 after Christmas. She's working through AAR 1 now.

My 15 yo son has finished all 6 levels and is just waiting for L7 to come out (in a couple of weeks!). My 13 yo dd is just starting 6. Both have improved immensely. Here's my original review, and my update (as of last winter). Both had significant spelling issues (sometimes spell check couldn't even identify what word they were trying to spell, spelling affected their ability and motivation to write, etc...) and now both have a good, solid spelling foundation and the skills to know how to learn new words. AAS walks students through 4 main spelling strategies and gradually teaches them to analyze words so that they can continue learning even after the program is completed. For us it's been a great fit. Merry :-)

We haven't finished the entire series yet, but we're almost done with level 5 and planning on using level 6 (and 7 if it comes out in time for us to continue straight from 6). My dd is an great speller, and the transformation from the jumbled mess that she was free writing beforehand to what she can produce now has been amazing. It's given her the freedom to write without having to pause her train of thought to think of how to spell a word. She's able to use the steps and rules taught to phonetically sound out the words she wants to spell, and spell them correctly.

I agree with a pp that there is a shift in the series from learning the rules to memorizing which words fit within which spelling of the sound. There are still rules to learn, but its assuming some memorization is going on too. But it has worked for us, so I'm ok with it. I'm definitely planning on using it with younger dd as the content seems to be easily adaptable to different learning styles and can be sped up or slowed down very easily. I frequently recommend it to those who ask how the h*ck my 5 yr old knows how to spell so well.
