A good craft basket must have ______

Recommended Posts

I am not a person who likes crafts. I never was, even as a child.

My youngest son, however, very much is.

Because shopping is not convenient where we live, I'd prefer to stock a craft cabinet with stuff so he can make projects out of books without me having to go out shopping for specific supplies. Suggestions?

I've recently added Popsicle sticks, twine, and fabric to our crayons, paper, scissors and glue.

What else should I stock up on?

We have a little craft area with the following: thin markers, thick markers, crayons, colored pencils, water colors, face paint, modge podge with small foam brushes, scrapbook paper, construction paper, felt and foam, stickers, foam stickers, various size google eyes - my kids love these, pipe cleaners, white card stock cut in half and folded ready to make note cards, 4 3/8" X 5 3/4 envelopes for note cards - get these at Walmart, and of course, glue, glue sticks, tape and scissors.

Have fun!

Add these over time:

Felt - different colors, styles, textures

Tacky Glue, Fast grab, Quick dry, etc...less time to set or dry, = reduced frustration (try the small multi-pak at walmart)

Lots of different types of paper in assorted colors, sizes, and weights like cardstock, construction, printer paper, tissue, mylar "tissue" paper, watercolor paper, sketch. 11x16 is perfect for folded "books".

Stapler and lots of staples..attachment is as much fun as decoration

Tape....tape is empowering :D like duct, cellophane, packing, etc..

Prismacolor color pencils...improves the overall quality of the artwork

Watercolor pencils - draw and the brush with water

Wiki sticks (beeswax coated string)

Beeswax or other non-hardening modeling clay

Air-Dry Clay...for pinch or coil pots and other creations

Washable tempura paints

Watercolors - liquid types make for more intense colors=better results

Sparklies - confetti stars, glass blobs, googly eyes, feathers, fur, leather....

Dollar woodcraft kits from Michael's

Chenille stems, or pipe cleaners

Magnetic adhesive "buttons"

Cardboard tubes

Styrofoam balls, assorted sizes

Low-temp hot glue gun

Wire and wire cutters - floral wire, craft wire, beading wire...wire is fun and largely reuseable!

Beads - (appropriate for the user) wood beads for doll/people heads, not just necklaces

Wool roving for hair, animal bodies (find on ebay-1/4 to 1 oz will do)

For a creative craft lover, new supplies are always inspiring! Keep an eye out for unusual materials.

I buy whatever is on clearance and just add it to the stash.

In addition to the above, my dd loves

fabric scraps

stickers

scissors with different edges

those decorative hole punches

paper with plain backs and envelopes from junk mail

glitter

colored glue

sequins

tissue paper

rubber stamps and pads

sponges for painting (shapes, or she makes her own designs)

stencils

I also keep on hand old magazines for cutting, comic pages for cutting and inspiration.

It's a sign of my non-craftiness that I don't even know what some of these items are.

I'm googling and making a list. I think I can pick up some of this as I'm picking up school supplies, and the child in question has an early October birthday, so I can use some of these as great birthday presents.

I'm :bigear: if people have more suggestions.

Thank you!!
