CactusPair
Has anyone used this volume in the series? How did you and your dc enjoy it? Could a 7 yr. old do it with help? I believe in evolution, old earth--not a creationist at all. But if it's a great program, I think I could adapt it for our use. Or could I? Has anyone used this if not secularly, but as an opportunity to explain that this is what some people think, this is what Daddy & I think? FWIW, my dear brother's family is creationist and I try to present material respectfully when speaking to my dc about our differing views. If Jeanne's zoology program is really great and doesn't come on too strong evangelicallly, I wouldn't have a problem using it. So I'm mostly interested in finding out if this curriculum is solid, scientific, interesting, fun, doable, and able to maintain the attention of my dc while teaching them a thing or two. Oh, and it can't exhause mom either. Can you tell me about the format, activities, how you used it, etc? The good, bad and ugly...let's hear it!:001_smile: Thanks! Mallory
Have you looked at any pages that are available online? I haven't checked for that particular book, but another in the series (winged creatures maybe) and I could quickly tell that it would NOT work for us. I think I saw the pages at Christian Book. VaKim
We are using it right now, but we are YE Christians, so it is perfect for us. I will tell you that it is almost the very "purpose" of her particular series, to show that creation is true and evolution is false. It has regular sections called "creation confirmation" throughout just for this purpose, plus including it all through the books. I honestly don't think you would be happy with it because all you'd get done is explain why you don't agree with it. Hope this helps. Chris in VA
Have to agree with VAKim. From the beginning, it includes Young Earth viewpoint--lots of mention of Noah, too, and each producing after its own kind. She states her views strongly. We learned interesting facts about the animals, and have enjoyed the activities so far, but honestly, I think it wouldn't work for ya. CactusPair
I appreciate all the insightful responses. Very helpful. I didn't realize that the creation part was the core of the program. I don't think it would work for us, either.:) Back to the drawing board! Thanks for your guidance, Ladies!:001_smile:
PeterPan
Cactus, I think you'd be a lot happier with something like WP Animal Worlds, sorry. The apologia elementary books are very distinctly christian, with comments woven throughout that I don't think a secular user would appreciate, not like it's just a chapter you can skip. And really, the level of the book isn't what I'd chose for a 7 yo anyway. There's a company making lapbooks for the apologia elementary books, so I'm going to wait on doing it (got it but am holding it) until theirs is ready. There's just a lot of content there that I think will benefit from the writing and lapbooking. The apologia books build in level, so you'd do better to start with one of the lower books, just my personal opinion. Have you looked at the astronomy? We did that back in K5, but it would actually be better with a 7 yo. I remember some christian references, but not as many as in the zoo2 (winged) we're doing now. Or my memory may be bad, very possible. :)
