siloam Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I have never heard of this program - do you have a link? Connie Marsha, It is brand new this spring, so only a few people have it in hand, and I am not sure any of them have started using it. I do know they only read selections out of SOTW. Probably the best places to find out more would be the WP forums or the WP famlies yahoo group. PM me if you need help in finding either. Connie, It is a new program put out by Winter Promise. Marsha Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 We are doing Core 1 and 6. I was thinking of adding HIH for my K'er and stretching it for 2 years. What do you think? Quote
dragons in the flower bed Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 What books are good to use from this program? Are there any that are not needed? Depends on what you are using it for. If you only want the history portion, you must get the Guidebook and SOTW, and probably Creating Clever Castles. I would consider the MYO pages, Usborne Encyclopedia as very good resources to have, but not essential if you're in a tight spot financially. I chose to do without On the Spot History Fun, or the cultural experiences add-on set, at all, because I already have a ton of crafty history books and picture books here. Quote
Emmy Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 HIH has some really fun activities for that age - it's just a lot of reading in books with few pictures. Basically HIH schedules out reading nearly all of SOTW 1, 2, 3, and 4 over the courset of 36 weeks and then adds activities to go with it. I love the concept of breezing through history at that age before studing it in depth but think it would be better with more picture books. I bought the WP exclusives so that I can add in the notebooking pages and activities for my middle to younger kids as we hit those areas in SOTW. Quote

I think you're not the first mom whose thought of doing something just like that, even though the program is brand new this year. I'm not familiar with Sonlight, but I don't know of any reason that HIH can't be stretched out over two years. We'll be doing that ourselves, to match up with the K & 1st grade history recommendations in LCC. Quote

siloam Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 We are doing Core 1 and 6. I was thinking of adding HIH for my K'er and stretching it for 2 years. What do you think? It might work well... or it might not. :001_huh: I put it that way because my kids, at that age, are pencil phobic, so they wouldn't want to do the Make Your Own (MYO) page or the skills development, which would just leave the craft section...and for that it might be easier to just use the SOTW activity books with the Creating Clever Castles & Cars. :001_smile: Ok to clarify, would you do the programs separately or combine them? If you want something similar to what the older kids are studying but you don't care if they exactly line up then HIH would work. If you are tying to get all the material in HIH, Core 1 and Core 6 on the same page, then I am not sure you would need the HIH IG, KWIM? Maybe just the MYO pages and the craft books. In my opinion HIH would work with children older than 1st grade, so you might not need to do Core 1 too. Again this goes back to are you are person who need the schedule and will do Core 1 by the book, or will you just throw in Core 1 books when they fit? I don't think you need to do three full programs by the book. :D Core 1 doesn't line up exactly with Core 6 either. Have you considered the SOTW Activity guides? They do have narration prompts (just not the nifty pages to write on, but they give you the topic), comprehension questions, mapping, and various hands on (cooking, crafts, activities, games). The advantage is everything is broken down by SOTW chapters, so other than choosing what to use there is no figuring out where things fit. Make sense? There is a 2nd-4thish reader package that goes with either HIH or CAW (Children Around the World) that might be of help to you. Can't find it on the website right now but I know it exists. Most are level 3 or 4 reader Step into Readers. Oh now I just saw the Cultural Experiences pack. That isn't in the catalog, but that looks really good. Well that kind of throws a kink into everything I have written, because now there is more reason to use the IG. ;) Well hopefully something I wrote will help you think through your needs and what will meet them. Feel free to ask me more questions if you think I can be of help! Heather Quote
Marsha Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 Well, I have a 12 year old doing Core 6... Plus an 8 and 7 year old doing Core 1. I don't care if they coordinate exactly. I am thinking of doing HIH and adding in books from Core 1. I may assign CHOW for them to read. Quote

I hope you'll let us know how it goes. :001_smile: This is what I am contemplating for next year- Core 1 with my then 8 and 7 yr old, but I was thinking of combining with HIH stretched over two years. The problem is the different spines for HIH and cores 1 and 2. Quote

I am thinking of doing HIH and adding in books from Core 1. I may assign CHOW for them to read. I think that would work. You can require more of the older children, especially in the way of the MYO pages and narration cards (I assume it has narration cards like the other programs I have done), then for the 5yo just allow them to come along for the ride and the hideaways! To be honest I considered HIH this year, and I wouldn't have had any problem doing it with a 5th grader. I would have just added more lapbooks (instead of the MYO pages because she can type them-told you she is pencil phobic :D ) and had her do additional reading. Sounds like a good plan to me! Marsha Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 Does it schedule the Cultural Experiences set? Thanks Quote
SnowWhite Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I think so! You all have me reconsidering my whole sequence! What if I did: AW (last year, 1st) AS1 (this year, 2nd), IRTL (K4) HIH and AW lite (3rd, K5) AS2 and SSBB (4th, 1st) CATW (5th, 2nd) S&S (6th, 3rd) AC1 (7th, 4th) AC2 (8th, 5th) S&S (9th, 6th) QAW (10th, 7th) QMA (11th, 8th) QRR (12th, 9th) This would be leaving "in depth" ancient history and middle ages till my eldest is in high school. That's a no-no, isn't it? Quote
dragons in the flower bed Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Does it schedule the Cultural Experiences set? Yes, all of the books in the Cultural Experiences set are schedule in the Guidebook. Quote
dragons in the flower bed Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Your plan looks great, Jennifer. I can hardly wait until 2018 when I will finally know if you managed to follow it. Think we'll still be on the boards then? Quote

chiguirre Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Just FYI, the MYO pages for HIH don't have much writing or too much drawing in comparison with the AW pages, for example. They look very doable for my 5yo and fine motor challenged 7yo. Quote

Lovedtodeath Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I think there is plenty to spread out for 2 years. I am spreading it Ancients and Middle Ages on year each adding one more spine. About the ancients: If there is a hideaway and an activity for all 7 weeks, then spending a year on ancients would give me at least one activity a month. From looking through my guidebook, I found that for the weeks spent on ancient history, there is one hideaway each week, at least one activity (most of the time two), and at least one notebooking activity (many times two).
