No one answered on the K-8 Curriculum board, so I thought I'd try again here. I found a 1988 copy of English Composition and Grammar - Complete Course by Warriner at a library sale. Apparently, it is the 12th grade book, but several have suggested it could be used over a number of years. The first course is for 7th grade, so I could start it then, I suppose. I just wondered if anyone actually had used it over multiple years and how it worked. Did you have to modify it in any way, or did you work straight through? Also, if you have used it, how necessary is the teacher's edition? Finding that to go with this would be a challenge! Thanks!

The following is from Christine Miller's Classical Christian Homeschooling website:

This excellent reference can be used throughout all three years of the dialectic to teach writing. It thoroughly covers grammar in detail, which provides a nice review for those children that need it, or for those children that missed some grammar instruction in the grammar stage. It also covers writing in detail, with a complete section on writing mechanics, usage, writing correct and clear sentences, paragraphs, and papers, the research paper, using references, and even public speaking.

Sentence writing in the first year of the dialectic:

Use these chapters (in this order) to teach writing correct sentences: chapters 10: Sentence Completeness; 24: Agreement; 25: Correct Use of Pronouns; 26: Correct Form & Use of Verbs; and 27: Correct Use of Modifiers. Use these chapters (in this order) to teach writing clear sentences: chapters 11: Coordination & Subordination; 12: Clear Reference; and 13: Placement of Modifiers. Use these chapters (in this order) to teach writing smooth sentences: chapters 14: Parallel Structure; 15: Unnecessary Shifts; 16: Sentence Conciseness; 17: Sentence Combining & Revising; and 18: Revision Exercises.

Paragraph writing in the second year of the dialectic:

Use Part One: Thinking and Writing to teach the writing process and prewriting, or gathering and organizing information. Then use chapters 1: Writing the First Draft, and 2: Writing Paragraphs to teach paragraph writing.

Paper writing in the third year of the dialectic:

Review the writing process and prewriting (gathering and organizing information.) Then use chapters 3 through 6 to teach writing the various kinds of essays. Use the material in Part Four: Resources, as needed, to teach using the library and other references, study skills, etc. as a child begins to learn to do research for paragraph topics.

I've got the Complete Course as well as the 3rd course (with MODG syllabus). I'm still trying to decide what to do :-)

We use them. I never use all the books--we do a lot of grammar before high school and then we do a year of grammar again before they graduate. This way we use a couple of the Warriners per child.

I like Warriners--it is a refreshing change after the elementary years of Rod & Staff. We do not do all of the writing--it is not as easy to use as the rest of the book (some children need more/varied instruction--my 2nd child has done well with the writing section, though).

We sit and do most of it orally. I have the TE and my child uses the stdt book. We could do without, but when we get into the more complex sentences, I do not always know the answer!

Do you have the TE for the Complete Course? If so, where'd you find that? I have my book from high school, but I get tripped up on some of the tougher assignments (grammar is not my forte :001_rolleyes:)

I purchased mine from Follett--but I got mine years ago before the WTM rush on the TE's. I purchased all of them at the time, not knowing how good of an idea that would be. Sorry! I'm no help.

Please excuse me from bumping up this very old thread. It discusses exactly what I would ask, so that is why I'm resurrecting it.

I have the English Composition and Grammar, Complete Course, copyright 1988. How can I find the TE for this? Does anyone have the ISBN?

Thank you!

We used this book for our 6th graders when I taught at a Classical School. The only problem is that NO ONE was able to find a teacher's edition. Let me know if you find the tchr edition. I have the book and would teach from it if I found a guide.

I did indeed locate a copy of the TE. I don't remember which website, though I could look it up in history. It was something like $250 + shipping, so I didn't bother to save the info.

I am in the process of examining the student book now to determine if I can teach without the TE. I have similar questions (see the thread I started here http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=244007).

I think I can, but it would be nice to have answers for reassurance.
