Mom0012
My dd is bright, but not what I would consider gifted. I think she might really enjoy MCT from the reviews I have read, but I do wonder about retention. I have decided I do not want to spend that much money or extra time to just to use it as a supplement. I am trying very hard to streamline our schedule. The other option is Hake, which I know would get the job done. She would definitely come away knowing her grammar well, it's not that expensive because all I need to buy is the student book (since my son has already done the program). There is no beauty to the program, though. So, what do you think? I guess my main question is do many people with bright (but not gifted) children use MCT as a stand-alone program and is retention good? NoPlaceLikeHome
That is a tough one. I have not seen Hake except for samples which look good. I did just receive MCT and can I say WOW!!! My son likes it as well. Now I do agree with other posters on other threads that another grammar is needed to re-enforce mechanics like capitalization and punctuation. To me MCT is still worth it because of the great vocabulary, high literary value, and high interest for my ds. ChandlerMom
There is very little "consumable" with MCT and the resale value is high. :D
NoPlaceLikeHome
I see you are using CLE LA. Why stick not with CLE LA as a firm foundation and add MCT as the fantastic icing on the cake:D Edited July 12, 2012 by priscilla forgot the word "not"

Why stick not with CLE LA as a firm foundation and add MCT as the fantastic icing on the cake:D Honestly, I am just really sick of CLE LA and I prefer Hake over it. (My son has used Hake for the last 2 years.) My original plan was to just switch her to Hake, but then when I saw how much she started enjoying math when I threw in Beast Academy and Life of Fred, I started thinking I should do the same with LA. Thank you! Lisa Edited July 12, 2012 by LisaTheresa
Mom0012
There is very little "consumable" with MCT and the resale value is high. :D This is a good point. The only issue I have other than price is not wanting to overload her. She's got a very full academic schedule and is in lots of activities as well. Ideally, if I was going to use MCT, I'd just use MCT, though maybe I could add in something like Evan Moore's Daily Language Review for punctuation? Hmmmm. Thanks! I guess my dd is a little older, so I'm thinking if I use this program, I would start her in the Town level and then maybe pick up the Sentence Island book since everyone raves about that. Another Lynn
I've never used either one (don't you love that kind of advice?), but if I were pulled towards MCT for LA, I would be inclined to do it now - in 5th. I guess because I read more about people using and loving the elementary levels (Island, Town, Voyage). Then you could always plan to use Hake in 6th to cover anything that MCT didn't. ETA: or even use Town in 5th, Voyage in 6th, and Hake in 7th/8th.

It seems like there is a window of opportunity for using MCT and now is the time. Thanks! Lisa

Lisa I am starting him with Town Level except for for poetry which inchose Music of the Hemispheres. I did not get Sentence Island since we have been doing writing with WWE, CC, and an EPS book Writing Skills. I did buy Paragraph Town and we hope to at least read it. Sentence Island does look interesting though:)
