Tarheel Heather Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 How does this work? With all the movie questions and dc wanting to go to Blockbuster, is this worth it. Do plans vary? Is it worth it! Quote
Jenny in Atl Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Netflix is so much better than Blockbuster if you really like to watch movies. They have a bunch more titles. We get 4 at a time for ~$16 a month (but you can get less or more). We hope to add there new service where you send the movie straight to your t.v. with their instant view titles (no added cost except for the little transmitter for $99). It's like iTV from Apple (but they just don't have the #'s of movies that NF has). Quote

Missouri Mama Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 We live in a rural area so this option is great for us because we have limited availability to movies. My dd signed us up for a free trial, & we received unlimited movies for a month. When you sign up, you enter the movies you would like to view according to your priority preference. They initially send you 2 movies & then allow you to have 2 movies in your possession at a time. As soon as you return one in their self-addressed envelope, they ship you another. It usually only takes ~2-3 days. You can sign up for different plans. I think the unlimited # of movies is ~$12-$14/mo. I think you can sign up to get as few as 2 movies/mo. for ~$5. Almost any movie you would care to view (classics, documentaries, new releases, etc.) is available. From my vantage point, it's a wonderful option! It beats driving into town to beat deadlines to return movies. I can drop these into my mailbox & view them according to my schedule. You can check out their plans online, & I would encourage you to try the free trial. Hope this helps! Quote
abreakfromlife Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I think it is. We tried to just use the library for movies, but it seemed like once a month dh would stop at the video store, and that was like 6 or 7 bucks. Our VCR also broke, and it is a couple hundred bucks just to buy a VCR now, which means we can't use all the educational videos the library has. So we got one of the basic plans from netflix. for 9 bucks, we can have one disc at a time, but we can get unlimited movies, and we can also watch unlimited instant movies from their site. They have a few different plans. Their shipping is very fast. I sent a movie back yesterday, and there was an email this morning that they've already received it, and will mail our next one today, and I will get it tomorrow. We really like it. They have a lot of national geographic, history channel, old cartoons, etc.....we don't have cable, so this has worked out very nicely. Quote
abreakfromlife Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 We hope to add there new service where you send the movie straight to your t.v. with their instant view titles you can actually already do this if you want to....you just need a cord connecting your computer to your tv. I suppose that's only helpful if your tv and computer are in the same room :D Quote
Tess in the Burbs Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 We loved Netflix. Have used it several times. But they do have a policy against users who get a lot of movies and twice it has happened to us and it's why we left. We will go back again in some time. We got the $17.99 plan(no idea what it costs now) and we got 3 movies at a time. We kept our queue full with a variety for everyone in the house. We would watch quickly and mail back. At first we got movies in a 2 day turn around. Then a month later it was 3 day turn around. And after 3 months we were lucky to get 5 movies a month. And I will say this last time we got broken movies a lot. I sent them back with the online form why it was broken and I kid you not they just resent me the same darn movie without ever checking the complaint!!!! You can't play a disc that literally falls into two pieces now can you :tongue_smilie: They admit they slow down fast movie watchers and they do. So your value will be great in the beginning but if you are a constant watcher and mail back quickly expect your return to slow down over time and your value go down. We will use them again....in time :-) Quote
mysticamethyst Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I don't think I would ever give up my subscription. I get 3 DVD's at a time, and the furtherst I have to go to return them is my mailbox. I hardly ever takes more than 2 days to get a new movie in the mail, and my kids get so excited to see the big red envelope, and they are older too. Quote
K-FL Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 It's great for us. We don't have cable or dish (which here means you have no tv.) We watch 3-4 movies a week. You can't beat the selection compared to a store. We haven't had any problem with them slowing us down. On the hot new releases, there's always a long wait so some of them we'll end up getting at the local Blockbuster. An occasional $5.35 rental is much better than 3-4 times that! Quote
Rhonda in TX Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 They have excellent customer service. I've called them a couple of times and they have always been very nice and helpful. Even chatty! :) Once they sent me the wrong disc. When I called them, they sent me the right one before I ever sent the wrong one back. That's what I would recommend if you get one that's damaged (which has never happened to us). I've never had a problem with turnaround time, but we don't watch the movies quickly enough for it to be an issue, I guess. I looked into Blockbuster online, but they don't have the wide variety of documentaries that Netflix has. We've been with Netflix for years and are very happy with it. Quote
WTMindy Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 We are going to subscribe to the cheapest one when we start up school again because there are a ton of educational movies. I think we'll go with the 8.99 plan, which is unlimited movies a month, but only one at a time. Quote
Amy loves Bud Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 We disconnected tv last year and bumped up to the unlimited, 4 at a time plan. This way each of the big kids can have a movie and Bud and I can have two. It's $24. We were paying $16 for 3 at a time and $40 + for dish. We love it. We send in a disc on day one, get an email on day two that the new one is coming, and receive the new disc on day three. There have only been once or twice in the three years we've used it that the turn around has been slower than this. The only thing is to be sure you manage your queue, or you'll end up with all kids movies and nothing for you, or vice versa. The other great thing we have found is that we have ended up watching a lot of things we never would have paid $5 for at Blockbuster, but went ahead and tried it with Netflix because it costs what it costs. We've found some gems this way. And we don't feel so bad if a movie is a big flop either. I highly recommend it! Quote

We complained and the issues with slow delivery and skipping blockbuster titles stopped. We have been members since 2002, and hope to be for many more. Quote

That is just wrong! However, I've never experienced it because we are pretty slow to return. ETA: I was posting while Jenny Atl posted. So glad that things have gotten better! I'd love to up my subscription for more movies at a time. Quote
Tammyla Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 We've loved Netflix here for years. We have the 3 at a time plan & the turn around time is 1 day except for returns mailed on Sunday. You keep a wish list and they automatically send you the next one at the top of your list. If it isn't in, they send the next one. They e-mail you to let you know when they are shipping and have received the discs. It really is easy. Only once did we have a cracked disc. They sent an extra one at no cost. We did loose one of the pre-paid envelopes and they sent another. They are goof proof. Quote

We will use them again....in time :-) Wow Tess, bummer! I don't know how long we have been using Netflix (around a year and this is our 2nd time-last time we went to Blockbuster for a short sting then turned both off), but we are high volume users (on the 3 plan, get them watch them have them out the next day most of the time). Still getting movies in 1 day. I don't know if the was an option before, but when we receive a cracked CD I can mark it immediately and they send out a new one the next day, before they receive the broken one, so we don't get the same disk back. I have had two broken disks to date. Now I have noticed that we don't get new movies as quickly as we used to. But we were aware of that issue when we signed up. Heather Quote
Kelli in TN Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 That is just wrong! However, I've never experienced it because we are pretty slow to return.. I don't have that problem either since one of the appealling things about Netflix is that I can hold onto a dvd fooooorrrrrrreeeeeeeevvvvvveeeeerrr and not pay a late fee. I guess they consider me a bargain! Quote
