3boysmama
Which one would be a better grammar program for my rising 9th grader? I can't do the DVD's for either one, so I'm talking just the stand alone student book and TM. TIA!!
melmac
I would suggest rod and staff over both of those. Just something else to consider. :)
Ellie
Rod and Staff would be my first choice, as well, but if I had to choose between BJUP and ABeka, I'd go with BJUP every time. More writing, less grammar each year (as it should be), while ABeka continues to beat up grammar every.single.year.
PeterPan
I suppose since I bought the BJU 9 for my dd, the Abeka 9 will turn out to be better. I thought the Abeka was fine when I looked at it, but dd fainted. It was just the visual, but there you go. The BJU 9 came in the mail and *I* fainted, lol. The way it's laid out, I really couldn't tell how to schedule it or how pieces fit together. I had guesses but I wasn't SURE, kwim? I ended up buying the tm, and that was a good move. There was a really nicely done schedule in the back. They have a 2 semester and a 1 semester option. Popped all that info into our ipad scheduling app (Errands), and boom it's done. The writing sucks. Well that's not being nice, so I'll be more clear. My dd is a reluctant writer at best and needs quite a bit of guidance with structure. I assumed the structure I had seen in the lower levels (which we didn't use but which I looked at), would be there. Nope. Zilcho, nada. The instructions are vague, both in the student text and the tm. I haven't really decided how I'm going to handle it frankly. I have an Abeka handwriting manual, which is of course a lot like listening to SWB, since she was trained on it. I could use that to flesh out the assignments. I have some other handwriting manuals, but actually the Abeka turns out to be the clearest for our purposes. I also went ahead and got WWS1. I gather WWS2 is coming out in January-ish or is hoped for by the masses. I have no clue. My dd is technically 8th, so I figure if we do WWS1 and maybe start into WWS2 (depending on how it goes and how quickly she moves), it's fine. With a 9th grader, you may be looking for something else (Elegant Essay from IEW, whatever). I'm just saying if you wanted really clear writing instruction and wanting it in the BJU English 9, I don't see it. If someone else knows what they were thinking, I'm all ears. 3boysmama
We have done Rod & Staff in the past and ds hates it! Maybe I'll pull it out and give it another look...who knows!

I had hoped to go to convention last month to get a look see at both of them, but I wasn't able to. This particular ds is also a very reluctant writer. I was already planning to buy WWS1 for my other ds, so maybe I should consider him doing it as well.
