Strengthen My Hands
We'll be traveling to Atlanta for the weekend. We don't have a lot of time but would like to know what the "don't miss while in the area" are? My daughter wants some good Falafel... any must restaurants? Any must museums? any other musts? Not wanting to spend too much money and if you look in my sig we have a wide range of ages to work with.
Laura in NC
My dd11's specialist is in Alpharetta, which isn't too far from there. The things we enjoy in Atlanta are The Coca-Cola museum(the tasting room is so fun) and The American Girl store in Alpharetta. We have not been to it yet, but there is a Lego Land Discovery center they just built. I've heard the Georgia aquarium is wonderful but I think it's a little expensive. You can also go on a tour of CNN's studio tour. There is also the Atlanta Zoo. There is also a Children's museum. I hope this helps.
lmrich
Kennesaw mountain national park is close to Marietta and cheap. Marietta square is charming and oozing in southern charm. Centinnel Olympic park in Atlanta is free and is pretty cool. The MLK site is nice (cheap too). Georgia Aquarium is awesome but $$$$. Personally I would focus on Civil Rights or the Civil War and see those sites. Don't know about great restaurants; there is a cool Australian bakery on the Marietta square. In smyrna we love US cafe for their great French fries and juicy burgers - even the turkey burgers.
macmacmoo
We enjoyed the Atlanta Zoo and Tellus science museum.
alpidarkomama
The history museum is GREAT. Innertubing on the Chattahoochee. Fernbank Science Center is free. Free observatory visits Thursday night (I think?). Fernbank Natural History museum is fun. Lots of good water-play parks. Our favorite was in Roswell and cost $1, I think. KidsHappen
They have an excellent zoo. Definitely an all day event.
funmamacita
For falafel: If you like the crunchy outside, dense and chewy inside kind, the Mediterranean Bakery (off 285 on Chamblee-Tucker Road) is good. If you prefer the smaller, more uniformly crunchy falafel, I recommend the Pita Palace (near where Lavista Road hits Briarcliff). Fernbank Natural History Museum has a fun Scoop on Poop exhibit right now that my kids love, but that might skew a little young for your older kids. Cinder
I second Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield National Park. Parking is free but limited. You can hike to the top and get a great view. Looks like there will be an artillery demo this Sunday too. Kennesaw also has the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History on the other side of town. Krista in LA
Atlanta is my dd's favorite place to go. If you are interested in Civil War things, I highly recommend the Cyclorama - very cool, and it's right next door to the zoo if you are interested in it. I've been to better zoos though... We also love Coke world. We drank the free samples from around the world until we were nearly sick. The aquarium is right next door to it and it's really nice. The CNN tour was pretty cool too. There are several museums that were nice like Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the High Museum of Art.
PinkInTheBlue
We love Atlanta! We often talk about moving up there. Everyone has covered most of the things I would have listed. Most of our eating is in the Buckhead area. There are so many great places to eat around there. :)
