I swear, the ammonia smell was so strong, I about passed out! They are getting a soak in bleach water and then a good wash out with Dawn. YUCK! I guess they were overdue for the big clean.

Switch gradually to pine cat litter. The chemicals in the pine neutralize the ammonia, and there is NO SMELL at. all.

I've used pine litter for about ten years now, and ammonia odor just isn't an issue anymore.

We have one cat. Yesterday I broke down and bought a new litter box. I simply placed the old one in a trash bag and carried it out like toxic waste. My mom has a cat that will use the toilet, oh how I wish mine would do that.

The first day we switched to pine, the cat flipped over the litter box and dumped the whole thing on the floor. I was trying very hard not to laugh at the bizarre purple color my husband's face turned when he saw!

Where do you get pine litter? O'Malley is a huge pee hound! That boy pees tennis ball sized clumps!

I did that last year. These aren't too bad. They cleaned up very nicely. I am certain that if we did a more regular total clean out, it wouldn't have been as bad. Dh usually does that but work has been crazy for him with lots of travel. Likely just slipped through the cracks. Well, the smell was really bad, so I just did it. Much better now. Next, if we can get rid of the carpet in that room, it will be better.

Our three cats can make an overwhelming amount of ammonia smell. We switched to Arm and Hammer High Performance clumping litter and it has made a big difference. This stuff works great! Less smell, less mess, no clay dust, and it clumps up nice and hard. We ran out a few weeks ago and I bought a regular clumping litter because our small local store doesn't carry ours. I had forgotten how bad the ammonia smell and clay dust can be.

I just buy mine at the Kroger. But Walmart has it, Food Lion (if you have FL) is where I first found it, lots of places. And it looks EXPENSIVE. But I use much much less. It just disintegrates instead of clumping.

Alright, lady. If I can't bite my dc, I think I should at least get to neg rep you for this one.

And right in the middle of my microwaved-cookie-dough chocolate fix.:glare:

Get a liner. I just use trash bags that I cut. I even use cheep litter. No mess, no fuss. Just grab the edges of the bag and throw it in the trash.

My cats didn't like the smell of the pine. We have tried about every kind of litter that's out there, LOL. We're stuck on Tidy Cat. Someone mentioned a kind for small spaces, and I may see if dh is willing to try that one. Swheat Scoop, we didn't like - very messy. That silicone stuff, not so much. I forget all the ones we've tried now.

If you didn't want to read about cat box issues, WHY did you open the thread, silly?

We've switched three cats to it, but did it very gradually, a handful, the two, then half the box, then 3/4, then the whole thing.

Did that until we got O'Malley. He is a very dedicated coverer. He will empty half the box with his scratching. This means he shreds the bag the first go in the box. Silly cat.

Sorry. I just checked back to make sure that didn't come across too snarky, because I was really, truly joking.

I posted another thread about my dc, wanting to bite them because of their disobedience, whining, my hormones, etc. So I've been hiding out from them here. Eating raw cookie dough.

And I came across your thread, & thought, "Ew!!!" & thought I might tease you about it.

And then I started wondering if I *really* trusted myself to "tease" anyone right now. Eek! Sorry!

Ohhh! Okay! Sorry, tad bit slow here. I thought it was teasing, but just had no clue as to how or what. Just a bit daft here!

My nose still can smell that ammonia too. Oh man that was rough. Sorry for making you gag. Would you like some Haagen Dazs? I got 3 flavors at the store tonight. Guess you can say I am hormonal too;).

And no need to be sorry. I just needed information since I am slow on the draw tonight.:D

Bleach will not cut the smell and bleach mixed with ammonia is bad. We have 4 cats and I wash their litter pans out with soap and Borax. Nothing deodorizes cat urine like Borax. When we first got married dh had 17 cats that he was placing in homes. We live a block from a forest preserve and folks often drop of cats and that winter several pg cats were dropped of and dh was in the process of finding home for the cats and kittens. The lowest number of felines we have had in the 19 years of marriage is 4. Long and short of it is I know how to get rid of cat pee odor :glare:

I had a box of winter bedding that was used unbeknownest to me as a pee box for long time by one of the cats who climb between the space of the basement ceiling and the floor of the upstairs to get into my locked storage room. I thought I had lost all of my flannel sheets but I soaked them with lots of Borax and washed them twice and voila no cat smell. Nothing works to neutralize cat smell like Borax. The best thing about Borax is it is cheap!!!!

Wow! Good to know! We usually give them a good wash here and there. This one has been longer so the smell was bad this time. I'll put Borax on the list. Thanks!

Yep! :iagree: I love that stuff. Simon, Sammi, and Horace liked it. Three cats using one box and no one could smell the box. When we were down to just Horace, I could go a month without changing the box. Then along came Emmy. That is one picky kitten (she's not a kitten anymore, but she is the baby of the family). I have yet to try her on it. The only change we have made that she has accepted is the purchase of the GIANT litter box.

So, definitely go for the pine if your kitty will let you.

Whew. Thanks for understanding!

I was just going to suggest Feline Pine. We're in the process of switching, and I am SO impressed. No smell at all. None. Nada. And, no harm to the environment, and no dust, and no perfume smell. I wish I'd switched years ago!
