Typing programs for the Mac

Recommended Posts

I searched amazon, and Sponge Bob seemed quite popular lol! I learned with Mario Teaches Typing way back when (on an ooold Mac), which was the closest thing my parents allowed to video games. They tried to get me to use Mavis Beacon, but it could simply not compete with Mario. Maybe Sponge Bob is the modern equivalent?

I have a Mac and am trying to figure out which typing program to use. Another option that hasn't been mentioned is Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. It's a download here: http://www.tenthumbstypingtutor.com/ It has a comic-book-like viking, says it teaches the 5 habits of highly effective touch typing, and you can type your iTunes.

I haven't actually used this program, but was considering it for us and thought I'd throw this option out there.

I have what I think is the latest version of MB. However, while the box says that it will run on a Mac, we have an iMac and it will NOT run on that. We recently got Parallels and are running it on that.

Come to think of it, I think this why we went with Spongebob. We have an iMac, too, and most of the mac typing software is designed to be used with OS9 (primitive and completely outdated). SpongeBob was the only one I could find at amazon that would run on OSX. Just because it says it is Mac compatible does NOT mean it will run on *your* Mac.

Good to know. I will make sure that I completely investigate before buying. Maybe a trip to the Apple store would help. Thanks!

If your Mac is newer (last couple of years or so) then you probably have an Intel chip and need to find software for Macs that say "Universal" on them (or at least say they run on Intel Macs). Even if it says OSx on it, it might be meant for PowerPC chips (the older Macs have these) and wouldn't run on a Mac that has an Intel chipset.

HTH,
