PeterPan Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 We're tossing around the idea of getting a new bed and considering a sleigh bed type. Are these hard to make? (king size, getting sheets on) Do you like them? I used to think crawling in over the foot of the bed was a non-negotiable, but after the last time I fell, I've given up that habit, hehe... So are there any negatives to them I should know about? I liked them 10 years ago, and now I think my taste may have moved on, where dh is just now seeing them as pretty. Can't decide if I want to compromise or find some excuse to get something different. ;) If you could buy ANY bed, what type would it be? What would it look like? Links are of course helpful! :) Elizabeth Quote
Michelle T Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I like beds with big, four-poster frames, a country or cottage feel. But DH is very tall (6'7") and his feet hang over the bottom of the bed, so he does not want any foot board at all. I do think having a foot board, or any type of bed with a large frame, would make it harder to neatly tuck in the sheets. Michelle T Quote
Mom2legomaniacs Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I don't care for footboards at all anymore. It is so much easier to make the bed without them! We are both taller and like not having one now. We didn't even get a headboard this time either! Just some large pillows for the bed make it look like a headboard. However, we were seriously considering this one from Pottery Barn. http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p2559/index.cfm?pkey=cfurbedall It has a sleigh bed look for the headboard, but a platform feel for the rest. I LOVE this bed. I saw it in person at a store too. Very nice and substantial. Gorgeous bed! ETA: the reason we did not get any headboard or anything was that we came into some other furniture that filled the room in a lovely way. Adding more wood, IMO, would have been too much for the room. Thus, using a variety of shams with pillows was a nice touch. Quote
astrid Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 We stayed at a B&B once that had a sleighbed. I was all excited at first; it was just gorgeous and I"d always wanted one. One night in it was enough to cure me of my desire for a sleighbed, though. Dh and I both like a stand fan in our room to move the air around. We like to sleep in a cold room, and even in winter like to have the air moving; we don't have central air (not much need here in New England.) Though this B&B had a lovely stand fan, the air couldn't really reach us because the footboard was so high and so solid. It blocked the airflow. It just felt very claustrophobic to us, and neither one of us is actually claustrophobic. Just another thing to consider. Quote
BamaTanya Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 but that's probably because we still get night-time visitors and I wind up in the middle. Squish! I LOVE the looks of a sleigh bed, but right now I'm used to NOT having anything in my way on that end when I make the bed. I go barefooted in the bedroom, and I do NOT like stubbing my little toe. OTOH, making the bed is a big energy zapper for me -- I don't enjoy it -- so others who enjoy the process and like fluffing up all those pillows might like the feel of a lovely, substantial footboard. No help at all, am I? Quote
Ferdie Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 We have a king sized upholstered sleigh bed that I love. The headboard is covered in leather so it is the most comfortable bed to read in. I'm not sure what you meant by crawling over the footboard, but I don't think that would work on a sleigh bed. It is much easier to roll off the side. LOL! I change the sheets on the weekend so my dh helps. I make the bed in the morning and for the most part the sheets and comforter stay tucked in the footboard. Every few days I have to retuck the sheets and blankets. newbie Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 We enjoy our new sleigh bed. The only issue is make sure headboard is padded if at all possible. Will never buy unpadded headboard again. Jet Quote
Kathleen in VA Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I, too, like the look of a sleigh bed - I like all the wood. They look cozy, too. I have one of those very outdated cannonball beds with the round balls on four corners. I've often wished for something more trendy (got this one for $40 at a yard sale), but now I wonder where I would stash all my sweaters, hats, purses, etc. I mean I might actually have to put some of that stuff away. :) Quote
Parrothead Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I've got a sleigh bed. Had it for about 10 years now. I like it well enough. If I had the money and the room I'd have one of those old beds with the high posts, canopy and curtains. Quote
angela in ohio Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I just got my dream bed two days ago!! I found an old "blonde" bedroom set from the fifties in an antique store. It even had the right size headboard! Dh is currently painting my bedroom a bright raspberry color, and I am looking at retro lamps, ugly bedspreads, and shelves to finish the look. My second choice would be a mission-stye bed, and third choice would be a canopy. Quote
EndsWell Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 We have a king-sized, extra-high sleighbed and we love it. We did have to lower it when baby #4 came - I'm too nervous about small kids falling off of it - and my husband helps change the sheets. Quote
abbeyej Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 We have a beautiful four-poster, but if I were buying a new bed, I'd certainly consider a sleigh bed. I stayed in a monastery once where I had a lovely antique sleigh bed, and I don't remember it being any more challenging to make than my four poster. (Granted, the sleigh was only a twin.) I guess it has never occurred to me that climbing over the foot of the bed would be a necessity. I mean, I *do* (my bed is really high, and I have steps at the foot of the bed), but I don't see why I would *have* to. If you want a sleigh bed, I say go for it! :) BTW, someone else mentioned a padded headboard. I wouldn't even want one. I would fear it would get dirty (heads being all greasy and nasty, even the clean ones, lol) and be impossible to truly clean (like carpet). We have a wooden headboard and have never had a problem with it. Quote
PeterPan Posted July 7, 2008 Author Posted July 7, 2008 Well cool! I never dreamed so many people would have sleigh beds and like them! I found the picture we had taken in a store of the one we're considering, and turns out it has a low footboard, meaning it won't be as hard to make and I could probably still climb over. ;) I agree, I adore a 4 poster bed. Unfortunately, I put the light fixture in the middle of the room, right where one of the posts would stick up from the bed. Just wouldn't look right. (I measured today to check.) So it sounds like the sleigh is it. Thanks! I'm sure I'll come up with some more questions soon!! :) Quote
Rebecca in VA Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 and, while it really is pretty, it feels claustophobic to me. My feet often bump against it when I'm kicking off covers and so forth. And hey, sometimes I *like* being able to slide out of bed from the end rather than the sides. While I don't hate it or anything, I wouldn't buy another sleigh bed. Quote
