chickenpatty Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 A friend has offered to watch our kids for 3 days. Where should dh and I go? 1) It has to be within a 5 hour driving radius of central VA. 2)Not Williamsburg or D.C. 3)Probably no beach rentals - we have access to a private beach already. 4)We like the outdoors, but camping might be a little too tiring at this point. 5)It can't cost a lot of money. 6)Help! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Quote
Kathleen in VA Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Someone else posted how nice Douthat State Park is. It is supposed to be one of the nicest state parks in the country. Quote
PeterPan Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Well this sounds naughty, but I plan my trips around food, hehe... Ladies on the board here mentioned this restaurant http://www.edelweissrestaurantva.com/ when I was planning my trip to VA and I wasn't able to make it. So I'd suggest going there to eat and driving up and down the mountains, finding a nice place to stay, etc. The tour books had said there was a nice antique/flea market a ways from there (ok, maybe an hour north), so you'd be able to find things to do of all types. There were houses of historic dudes, if you're into history, which I'm not. The ladies said the food at this place was really good, quite memorable, so that would be enough for me! :) Quote
huntergirlnc21 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 How about around Boone/Blowing Rock, NC? I was just there this past weekend and I can't wait to go back (we're camping in that area @ 2 weeks from now). It is such a beautiful area and there is a lot to do - maybe you could take the Blue Ridge Parkway down from VA. There's Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock, Linville Caverns, Valle Crucis (make sure to visit Mast General Store), Linville Falls, and so much other stuff, I can't even name it all. If you are going this weekend, the Scottish Highland Games are going on at Grandfather Mountain! I really want to go back to see this. It's not a long drive into Asheville either, and there's tons of neat things in Asheville, besides the Biltmore Estate. I would say find a neat B & B, but if money is an issue, there is a new Sleep Inn in Boone where we stayed, and I highly recommend it. The rooms were nice - and fairly cheap - even for July 4th weekend (@ $71/night). They have a heated outdoor pool (it was great), and it's in a pretty convenient location. It also wasn't very crowded at all, even for a holiday weekend. Quote
Brindee Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 How about St. Croix, US Virgin Islands? :D Oh wait, you said it can't cost much! (That's where dh and I honeymooned 20 years ago!) I don't have any REAL suggestions, but I hope you find a GREAT place and have a romantic 3 days!:001_wub: Quote
chickenpatty Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 Thank you all for the suggestions! I checked out Blowing Rock, and got all excited about it, until I realized it's 6 hours from my home. I think that might be too much time to spend driving. ? Of course, we could drive to Edelweiss for the first leg of the trip and stay in that area. Yum! I am all for planning a trip around food! I checked out Douthat state park last week and am saving it for a trip with the kids, too. Thanks for the suggestion! I enjoy planning and thinking of all the possibilities. :001_smile: Quote
