Quick explanation of short division?

Recommended Posts

Somehow, I have ended up with a child who can score nearly perfectly on a practice SAT math section and yet has no idea how to do short division. Apparently she's always done long division. I've tried explaining it to her and she doesn't get it. Hive, help!

short division works great if you are good at mental math. For those of us who are messy and disorganized, writing down those intermediate steps keeps us from making dumb mistakes. Short division is nice for saving space, but can be tricky to use if the divisor is large. I know how, but I usually use long divison when doing it on paper because I can use the same method regardless of the size of the numbers.

Here's a nice explanation for short division. It even has a link at the bottom where you can compare it to long division.
