babs Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 buy for a child going into Saxon 7/6 or TT int. alg? How do I figure this out without spending lots of time on the phone with the rep?! I just want a bit of supplementation for word problems and I like Singapore. Thanks! Quote
Sue G in PA Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 I have CWP 4 for my dd11 who just finished 7/6. She could probably do CWP 5 but she has problems w/ word problems and application so 4 is just about right for her. She also took the Sing. placement test and tested into 4A :001_huh: so CWP 4 is good. HTH Quote
HSDCY Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 For Singapore program, level 4 is where they get into more serious word problems. I have never used Saxon so I don't know its scopes and sequence, but if your child is strong in math she/he might fly through most of CWP 4 with the exception of where the bar diagram method is used. If you have a child who is average in math, you definately want to start at level 4. If you are not sure, it's best to do a placement test to determin the right level. HTH. Quote
CoffeeBean Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I did all sinapore 1a-6b and always used the Challenging word problems a year behind the textbook. The bar method, I believe starts in 3. I'd try 4 .The bar method is simply to get someone thinking algebraically without having algebra. If they've had algebra they can solve those problems without the bar method. It sort of takes the icing off the cake but a solution is a solution. By the way, the books aren't really boring, I liked trying to solve them without algebra just to see if I could do it so don't worry about it being too baby-ish. CoffeeBean Quote
