RainbowSprinkles
Over the years I've looked at and considered Oak Meadow so many times. But I always changed my mind for one reason or another. Well, I'm happy with how things are going for my two older dc, but I have two little ones and my 3 year old will do preschool come fall. I really feel like I want to give OM a shot and it'd be perfect for my ds3 as he's at the beginning. He will turn 4 in January. So I'm considering OM K. If not this coming year, then next year. I'd like opinions from Oak Meadow users. :bigear:

I can't decide. But I will say, at least for my pre-k, it still pretty (maybe too much so) darn gentle. I am pretty torn but more than likley will shelve the K. Closeacademy
For pre-K I would not use Oak Meadow. It is very, very basic and not explained well. If you want to go this route then I would recommend Before the Journey. The price of Before the Journey & the K curriculum that she sells is about the same/less than OM and you will get so much more out of it at this age. I've been there and thought I would throw this out for you all.:001_smile:

I wouldn't use Oak Meadow's PreK unless you're just wanting to get used to the painting, circle time and rhythm of the day; that's all that is included in OM's PreK. Oak Meadow K may be gentle, but there's a method to their madness, so to speak. If you are wanting to stay with Oak Meadow for the long term, I would suggest just waiting until he's in Kindergarten to start. When my oldest was in PreK we did Sonlight's Core B, Singapore EarlyBird Math and K & 1st Grade Readers/Language Arts. It went well academically, but she wanted to paint, draw, and do more artsy things. I'm not an artsy mom, I'm more comfortable with Literature and Math. After peppering Audrey with lots of questions, I called Oak Meadow to ask for placement advice. They still recommended Oak Meadow K because it builds upon itself. It took me a while to trust this, but now that we are heading into 3rd grade, I am very glad we did. 3rd grade is much more rigorous and challenging, I am really looking forward to letting my daughter do a lot of it on her own. The Kindergarten stories (both in the Syllabus and in the Fairy Tales book) are meant to create attention and get the student ready for reading. They aren't picture books like some other Kindergarten programs are, quite the opposite. The child is also required to think about the story, form a picture in their mind, then draw it on paper. Even if your 5 year old is advanced (like mine was) they are still 5 and I am so glad we did K at the normal pace. We are going to be doing more advanced math than their 3rd grade because she can easily. We talked to Oak Meadow and this is very normal. We are currently working through Oak Meadow 4th grade math and will probably go through 5th grade this year as well. Hope that helps. :)
FairyMom
Another suggestion... Christopherus' Kindergarten With Your 3 to 6 Year Old is worth the money. That's what we did for PreK and part of K. :)
