I'm Angela and I did, in fact, read all 357 posts before hitting "reply". :D

I am a super-liberal, Catholic girl from Maine, now living on the flat side of Maryland.

I was a poster on the old boards, before my boys were born, then sort of fell off the internet from twin sleep deprivation for a while. When I got back on, I mostly hung out on the Mothering boards, then found my way back here when I tired of being called a fascist because I am not a radical unschooler (it's simply not my nature). When I came back, we had the "new" board and I couldn't remember my old username. I still have no idea what it was.

My husband and I have three children at home, and I have a 23yo daughter from a previous marriage. She graduated from PS, the younger three have never been to school. We took up homeschooling for academic reasons when our 4yo was reading but not eligible to start school for another year. We are now beginning our 8th year of homeschooling (WHA??) and have come to enjoy all those other social, environmental perks as much as the pursuit of academic excellence.

Before the boys were born, I worked as a software engineer, building integrated workflow management systems. I remember being warned about another engineer on a project: he was a "weirdo" homeschooler who took his family to corn mazes. (He was a little odd, even by IT standards) Now I LMAO every year when we hit the corn mazes in PA and locally.

My husband is a firefighter/paramedic/officer in the fire department (that seems redundant), and works a 24 on / 72 off schedule (so, every 4th day). Last year, he took over the bulk of planning and teaching to give me a breather while I went back to work (very) part time. This year, we will be splitting the subjects - him, STEM; me, liberal arts - so we can each focus in an area with the kids instead of one of us losing our minds trying to fit everything in with all of them every day.

Welcome to the new and just out of lurking members!

I have two children and have been homeschooling for 5 years. Right now the plan is to home school through high school. Finding these boards has been the best thing for me. I have found wonderful resources and slowly shifted more of our homeschooling to more classical influences.

Hi I'm Lynn (obviously). I found the board just a few months before it became the new board. We have 5 children we've homeschooled from the beginning. I began (mostly) with AmblesideOnline, but later read WTM. I'm notoriously more interested in content than skills - which I'm constantly trying to overcome. Our main reasons for homeschooling were 1) a protest against the idea of institutionalized school, 2) the belief that learning should come primarily from the parent relationship, and 3) the opportunity to plow the soil of their hearts for the planting of the gospel. Academic excellence is also important to us - I just didn't realize how much I took that forgranted until I met some (IRL) who don't consider it as important.

I post on the curriculum board more than the general board, but often read the general board, learn a great deal, and pray for many requests posted here.

I'm Rene, mostly a lurker. We just finished our 3rd year of homeschooling after a few years at Montessori school. I tell my IRL friends that the WTM board is my link to the outside world! It's my source for all news, health info, etc. I have learned so much here, but on the flip-side: if I spent more time teaching than reading about teaching (and kilts, shopping carts, in-laws, etc.) we would be much farther down the road. :auto:

Oh well, it's fun.

I'm JFS and have four kids - CollegeMan and SillyAutismMan (fraternal twins, 20), Jean (18, high school grad starting local cc in fall) and Jackie, 16.

Home schooled CollegeMan 3,4,5,6 and 8th grades - then he went into AP and Honors at the local high school. I brought him home in the first place as there was no gifted program for younger kids here, and no history (a fav subject of ours) at all.

Jean was home schooled most of 1st grade, 2,3 and 4. Start of 5th grade she went back - this kid is a pistol, (still is - now we know too that she is the minor type of bi-polar) and we could NOT get along 24/7. She did much better in school.

Jackie bounced back and forth - She did K in public school, 1 and 2 here, then re-did 2 with a reading specialist (excellent teacher!) at public school. Jackie had a minor (and earlier caught since we knew what it was) version of the seizure disorder SillyAutismMan has, and she needed that extra time and help to learn to read and learn. Anyway, she was and is very social, and stayed in school for 3rd grade...only they put her in a 3/4 split with a newbie teacher. I kept her home for 4th to make up for 3rds grade. Then she wanted to go back to school for 5th...right when the district changed to the awful Chicago Math program. So back home mid-year. I put her in mostly 6th grade material then, worked on math over summer, did 7th grade math etc. in what would have been her 6th grade year. By middle school (7/8 here) she was ready to go back to public school - and into Honors English and Pre-Algebra (most kids here do not do pre-al. until 8th grade.) She is in high school, still Honors English and a year ahead in math. Not the outlook we feared back when she was diagnosed as a toddler. She is and will be fine now.

All along whether a kid was in school or at home depended on the needs of each kid vs. what was offered at school vs. what I could do at home.

SillyAutismMan was home schooled only ONE year (the year I had all four at home at once). I am STILL working to teach him to read. It may take a long time - which we have, as he will never live away from home. He has one more year of public-funded school (mostly field trips etc. at this stage) then he is home for good.

I am a Southern Californian born and raised, worked at Disneyland and AMPAS and UCLA Film Archives (got BA from UCLA) and moved to Illinois for PhD program at Northwestern. Got my MRS. and MOM before finished my dissertation, then the MOM was twins - one disabled - and finishing a dissertation on the Image of Women in the Hollywood Biographical Film went by the wayside.

Since my field of study was (mostly) film history and preservation, my kids grew up appreciating Harold Lloyd, Keaton, Cagney, etc. ;-)

I love to bake, love cats, can juggle, and lost 49 lbs the past year. Obviously it has been a few years now since I home schooled, but I am a reclusive introvert, and these boards and you folks are all the social life I need. Doubt you will ever get rid of me.

Here is another newbie! I have used the boards for research the last year, but decided to sign up today, so this is a perfect chance to first post. I am in my third year of homeschooling my four kids(well, the older two anyway).

I am VeritasMama, I have 6 kids, 4 great boys and two girls at the end. The boys are 11, 10, 7 and 5 years old, respectively. The girls are 2 yo and 8 months old. I don't think of my family as large, but most others do. We are Catholic, but I would probably have 6 children even if I happened to be Methodist :001_smile:. Two of my boys have some learning difficulties, namely some dyslexic tendencies and dysgraphia. I have a degree in education and taught preschool for several years in a private school setting.

My oldest two are back in private school after homeschooling for two years. My 7 year old is still homeschooling and always has. My 5 yo will be going to a private school for Kindergarten this year, and he will be afterschooling with his older brothers. I plan on homeschooling my girls all the way through.

I am an ecclectic homeschooler who uses LCC, WTM resources as well as Ambleside Online, Mater Amabilis, MODG and some other Catholic curriculum thrown in with the kitchen sink. For math we love us some Singapore along with LOF.

This year I am planning on switching to Memoria Press for our core lesson plans along with CHC for religion. I am trying to take a break from planning every little thing myself :tongue_smilie:.

Good Afternnon,

My name is Imani and I am a wife and home schooling mother of 5 ages 12, 7, 5,4, and 2. Began our home schooling journey 9 years ago after learning our eldest daughter was being mistreated by her kindergarden teacher and aid in the same school district I was employed as a teacher. My husband I agreed that there was no need for me to return to my school teachers job and thus began our home unschooling soul journ. Since then we have been blessed with the addition of 4 more births of 2 ds and 2dd.

We love discovering, instructing/guiding, and growing with our children and from them too.

Hi, I'm Kim. I used to post on the old board, and was active for awhile on the WTM high school Yahoo list back when eldest was in high school. I was read-only here for a really long time.

We're heading into our strangest year ever, a sabbatical year. I have a weird form of lymphoma and struggle with a lot of nausea and exhaustion. So we made the decision to unschool for one year (exceptions: ds 13 will do pre-algebra and ds 6 will do reading, math, and science in a more structured way). I need to get my house together. Some of the younger ones haven't had the same kind of life-skills training that the older ones got. I need to catch up my physical home and my discipline home and do it through the health challenges.

Hi All! :seeya:

I am Adrianne and my dh Jeff and I have been married 22 years this fall. We have our three children and have always homeschooled. We contemplated sending Macklin to the district's special needs preschool program when he turned 3 but it was so awful I was in tears after the tour. They actually suggested I could come be his (free) aid! :glare: So at that point we decided to homeschool and have never looked back.

My oldest has just started to take classes at the local community college and we plan to help her try to figure out what she wants to do next. I am still working on basic academics with my son. My youngest dd is the eager, easy student. I really needed one!

We are not a strict WTM homeschool, but I do use bits and pieces and enjoy the ideas, conversations and fellowship I find here.

I'm Lisa. I've been married to my husband, Mike, for 10 years. This is our first year homeschooling. Our daughter is 9.5 and our son is 8.5. I am looking foward to our first year of hs'ing although I am nervous about doing it after having started ps. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period to say the least.

Hi, I'm Cindie. I'm a flight attendant and my husband owns his own business and works strictly from his computer, and he brings the girls with me when I fly. We love to travel, so a conventional schedule would severely limit that. We also don't agree with the philosophy and educational system of the local school district, which dh attended K-12.

In a nutshell, we homeschool for socialization (the public schools here remind me of Lord of the Flies) and academic reasons.

I originally joined the boards in early 2009, but got so sideways with all the curricula choices that I deleted my account for a few months. I came back last year as FairyMom. :seeya:

I'm Lynn and have been married for 19 years. I have four children, dd18, dd13, ds9 and ds15 months. I currently only homeschool dd13 and have been since she was 10. DD18 never wanted to be hs'd and never had any complications in PS. I would like to homeschool ds9 at least by the time he starts middle school and am still trying to convince DH that I can. We are trying to learn about afterschooling for now though. I plan to hs ds15 months for preschool and go from there.

I found this board while learning about high school curriculum. I lurked for a while but found everyone here so nice I decided to join. I am still concerned about the challenges of high school but am excited as well.

In addition to homeschooling we spend lots of time with our horses. The two middle children attend our local fun shows.

I am looking forward to being a part of this board!:)

Hi, I'm Dana! My husband is active duty Navy... We move often (another move is just 5 months away!), and I've been homeschooling our boys since the very beginning! They are now seven yrs. old (fraternal twins), and I call our school 'Harbour Lights' as a play on our way of life and being 'a ship at sea' most of the time. I view homeschooling as a safe harbour where my boys can count on some aspect of their lives being consistent. My main reason for homeschooling is academic, but I love it for so many more reasons!!

Hi, my name is Corie, and I'm a newbie to these boards and excited to be here! I've been married to my best friend for 22 years and we have three children. DS (13) and DD (11) attend PS. Our youngest DS (5) has Sensory Processing Disorder and has a very tough time in group situations. (He was starting to have headaches and stomach aches just anticipating the days he was to go to preschool...group settings are both emotionally and physically painful to him.) So we decided to homeschool him, and now that I know so much more about it and how many benefits there can be I can't tell you how excited I am about it! I'm a research junkie, so this forum is right up my alley and I have already learned so much! :-)

Hi, I am Ellen, other wise known as Dirty Ethel. I have been a member of these boards since the old format (waiting for them to turn and be the first on the new board - never happened.)

I have 3 children - 18 year old son who graduated this June and is heading to Hope College in 4 weeks, a 16 year old son who is a metal-head guitar player with an interest in astrophysics and math, and a sweet 12 year old daughter who loves to read, make up stories and rock climb.

We have homeschooled from the beginning. I stumbled onto this journey when my oldest was 3 and couldn't go to preschool. Around here EVERYBODY sends their kids to preschool, so he had absolutely no playmates. When I learned about homeschooling - something just hit me that this is what we were meant to do.

I love the fact that they can grow up gently, be themselves and have some insulation against bullying. Without the peer pressure of school, my oldest was able to continue with his passion for dinosaurs and paleontology long after it ceased being cool. This allowed him to develop a passion for science. I love that my middle son who had some sensory issues was allowed to learn in appropriate environment while we worked on those issues. I love that my daughter can stay sweet and loving without the toxic mean girl syndrome that seems to start in Kindergarten.

I love the pace of our family - that we are not constantly rushed with sports, then homework with no family time.

I love the fact that my kids have very close relationships. Our house will be very different in a month. While I am thrilled for my son, I am working very hard at not dreading him leaving. LA LA LA - I can't hear you.

I like that I can tailor the academics to the child.

I like the fact that popular culture is something my kids know about, but are not infused with it every minute of the day.

I like that our lifestyle can instruct the kids in our faith rather than having to constantly combat popular culture.

We live in the Chicago area - I have lived in the 'burbs most of my life and don't want to live anywhere else (corrupt politicians aside;).)

Forgot to add ... My passions used to be what I called the four B's - Birth, babies, breastfeeding, and books. I gave up my childbirth education business, don't have any babies anymore, and am limping along in my Usborne book business (too many other things taking my attention.) However, outside of my family, my burning passion is rock climbing. Most forms of exercise have me mentally counting the minutes until I am done. However, when I am on the wall, I push myself much harder, rarely thinking about the exertion, but about how I am going to solve this puzzle.

I'm Kristin. I've been around these boards for nearly a year but we didn't have internet so my presence was sporadic. We have internet now. So I'm able to be here more.

I have two daughters and a little farm in KY. We love it here. Goats, chickens, pigs, giant garden. Working on ways to make this place profitable as well as homesteading. Wendell Berry is a total inspiration to me and we moved to the same county as him about 5 years ago (not because of him though) - I've gotten to hang with him several times. It blows my mind that he actually knows who I am. DH says if Wendell wasn't so old he'd be worried. :tongue_smilie: Just a little fun tidbit about me.

We homeschool for so many reasons. Because I think I can do better at tailoring my childrens' education. Because grades conditioned me to focus on the ends and not care about learning. Because DH grew up thinking he was dumb because he was bad at tests but actually learned far more than I. Because I don't like the socialization that happens at school. Because our family needs to be the primary relationships for my children. And on and on.

I was a minister in my past life and now my faith community is made up of house church folks from our rural community that meets Friday nights and other times (very devout, very conservative) and a liberal Baptist church in the big city (very liberal, very open, very liturgical) on Wednesdays and Sundays. Strange but it works for us. Trying my hardest to be a Christ follower through all life's craziness.

So impressed with the community here. Loving it.

Remudamom here, also known as MaBelle to at least two others on this board. Married 34 years and after almost 20 years of homeschooling I'm finished. Been around since the old board.

Live on a cattle ranch with dh, four of the children still home but probably only for one more year. One dog, ten cats, three ponies, three horses, lots of chickens and the cattle on the ranch.

It came from a Pirate Name generator that someone on the old boards posted in honor of Talk Like a Pirate day. At the time, there were several Ellens on the board and I would lose track of what I posted and what another Ellen posted. So, I adopted it as my new moniker. Plus, I love the idea of having a buxom, salty-tongued alter-ego - at least that is how I see her. Now that I think of it, that sort-of describes my older sister (my polar opposite.) Egads!!

This will be my ninth year teaching my two at home, ds is almost 17 and dd just turned 15. I started homeschooling when we moved to our current town. The kids had been in a classical school before we moved and there was just nothing here that even came close to meeting their needs academically. I am a certified science teacher, had just finished up when we moved, so I started teaching middle and high school science classes for homeschoolers. I now have an amazing lab thanks to my dh's hard work on it!

Word spread though, and now I have 3 science, 3 math, 9th grade Eng/Hist/Lit and 11th grade Eng/Hist/Lit classes scheduled for this year.

It's hard work, but I love it so much. And don't tell the kids, but I just love that I get to really see them interacting with their friends on a daily basis.

I'm Crissy from Delaware. I've been married 14 yrs. and together we have a 13 yr. old boy. We homeschooled through kindergarten and then DS went to a small public school for 1st - 5gh. For 6th and 7th he went to an even smaller Christian school at our church. Even though this is our first "official" year homeschooling since K, we've always summer schooled so this is just kind of like a really, really long summer. :tongue_smilie:

I'm Holly and this will be our second year homeschooling for academic reasons. Kiddo takes extracurriculars through a local charter school. I still have panic that I'm not *enough* but she seems to be thriving.

The spouse is a disabled veteran. We've had an adventure filled 11 years so far and have lived all over the states (thanks Army!)

We moved to the Sacramento area a year and a half ago hoping the milder climate would be better for us all. It has and we love it!

Hi everyone, I am Shannon. I live in Honolulu. I read TWTM a year ago and have never looked back. I enjoy physical comedy, intellectuals and chips with salsa. I love my four children so much it hurts. I try to walk with God. I am that person who walks around the party for 45 minutes before she notices she has toilet paper stuck under her shoe.

Love these boards so far.

Faithmanor here - I go by Faith most of the time.

We live in Michigan, dh is an Oracle Senior Consulting DBA for a large computer firm and works from home most of the time because he's on a global account and most of his collegues are in 11 other countries. I was a professional pianist, music and science teacher, and music therapist in my former life - pre-homeschooling.

We have four children, the eldest graduated from homeschooling three years ago and is a little more than halfway through her chemistry/pre-med degree and is working full-time presently as a paramedic. The other three, all boys, are 7th, 9th, and 10th and headed to STEM or STEM related fields. Aerospace Engineering and Mathematics, Biology/Zoology with a double major in Chemistry, and Computer Software Engineering with double minors in Geology and Archaeology - though this child waffles a little while the others do not so maybe it will change before he graduates in three years.

Dh and I lead a STEM 4-H science club and I think I have "supreme science nerd" wrapped up on this forum! That or "Mom of child who is going to be the death of her for collecting bizarre and at times, slightly scary, critters!"

Hello everyone! I'm back after about a year away :)

My name is Karen and I live in beautiful but humid Delaware. I love gardening, trying new recipes, travel, and teaching math and science to our youngest child. Dh and I have been married for almost 21 years (!!!). He is a Certified Financial Planner and is able to work part time from a home office, going into the real office 2 or 3 days a week.

Our son is a rising college sophomore at the institution just down the street. We told him when he chose the local U that we'd treat it like he was going to school out of town----we wouldn't "drop by" as long as he didn't "drop by." Some weeks he comes home for a meal or to do his laundry, some weeks we only communicate through texts. Midway through the year he switched majors to comp sci and in March found a great job working in IT on for one of the U's colleges. He works 12 hours during the school year and full-time during breaks.

Our older daughter is a rising senior at a private high school. We are deep in the college search with her. She likes schools totally opposite from her brother's choices...She is a theatre and writing geek and writes on multiple blogs.

Our youngest is a rising seventh grader. She 's been home schooled since fifth grade. We pulled her from her old school for academic reasons as they couldn't accommodate her math needs. Math is her favorite subject with hands-on science a close second. She studies classical ballet four or five days per week, has been in the same Girl Scout troop since kindergarten, and is currently building a massive treehouse with her father :)

We anticipate that Dd will attend a brick-and-mortar school for high school. There are many choices available to her and we will begin to investigate those this fall. I am keeping all options open, so I expect to spend a lot of time on the High School board ;)

I had a very rough time this past year which explains my long board break. After our lovely extended family vacation last summer, my father died unexpectedly. As that came less than two years after my mother's death I was in shock. I am the executor and trustee of their estates so I was responsible for all the hard decisions. My sisters helped with getting the house ready for sale and sorting through all their belongings. That was and still is really rough----I have bins and boxes in the garage that still need to be sorted. My sister is sorting through photos and I have all the memorabilia and photos from my parents, my grandmother, and my great aunt. We were blessed that my parents' house needed minimal work and that it sold in 5 days for our asking price. I still didn't relax until the closing.

I had to adjust dd's school plans to fit our changing circumstances (post on the Logic Stage board) which caused me some stress/anxiety but it had to be done. We are looking forward to a great school year

Happy August!

I'm Beth. I've been around since the old boards. My older dc homeschooled 'classically' during their middle school years only. Younger dds love homeschooling and the variety that comes with my hybrid approach to education. We take advantage of local classes, tutors, online classes and mom-taught subjects when they're lucky. Never a dull moment around here. We have a strong STEM focus. Other random details in my blog below if you're interested.

Thanks for letting my play. :)

Hi, i'm Cara. I've been on the web many places and just dropped in here like a bomb, im afraid. I was looking for more ways to waste my time . . .

I live in Richmond, VA with my husband and 3 kids:

Dd is almost 20 and will be starting at VCU (local, living at home) as a transfer this fall, and is working part time at Staples. She did her last 2 years of high school jointly between public school and Community College.

DS16 is twice exceptional, and suffered through public school k-7. He is bright but has so many emotional and motivational and analytical deficits that its hard to figure out what to do with him some times. He spent time in public school gifted classes, special ed classes, and in-school suspension despite an IEP

DS8 (almost 9) only went to public K. He started waking up every morning crying because he didnt want to go back. This finally convinced dh to let me homeschool. this one is advanced in math and behind in language

Dh is step-father to the older two, and we agreed I would continue to support my kids, so him agreeing to homeschooling was a bid deal.

my username is dbmamaz for databse mama . . . database being what i did for a living before . . .

we are also gluten and dairy free

  • 3 weeks later...

I am a new member and have been looking for the area to introduce myself for a few weeks as I 'lurk!'

Another homeschooling mom introduced me to the site and I have since read the WTM.

We began homeschooling ds in Feb 2011, his first grade year. From then until recently we have unschooled; beginning classical education is quite a change for us. I appreciate the curriculum reviews and resources I have found here.

Last week we began third grade with SOTW1, I Speak Latin, Spelling Mechanics 4, and various resources for science, math, and grammar.
