Mabelen
So seeing how much my rising High School Junior hates Geometry, I am trying to do better for her little sister... What items should I have in the house for afterschooling my rising 3rd grader? Her school uses Houghton Miffin Math Expressions, which is a good program that I am happy with overall. I afterschool as reinforcement, to make sure she is learning all those concepts presented in school. She is a good math student but not intuitive. Any ideas? Thank you so much! Mabelen
Bumping, hoping somebody used any geometry manipulatives they can recommend for building a good foundation in the elementary years!
Chrysalis Academy
:bigear: We'll be doing a Geometry section for our first math unit in August. I am not a great spatial/figural thinker, and I think Miss P is a lot like me . . . We are using Beast Academy's chapters on Geometry and Perimeter/Area, I think that would be perfect for afterschooling your 3rd grader. I like the looks of these much more than MM's chapters. We also have a couple of games, Angleside School Adventure & Blokus, but I'd love more ideas for ways to make geometry fun and relevant . . . though I think BA will probably do it, from what I've read on other threads. besroma
We are enjoying Gizmos by explorelearning dot com. A good living math book is Mummy Math: an Adventure in Geometry. We use these with geometric solids from RR. RR has different sets...solid wood, and plastic that you can see through. The plastic ones are used in RR's Shiller Math sets. Mabelen
Thank you both for the suggestions. I will explore them. @rroberts707 We are in the same boat, not very spatial/figural thinkers here, which is why I feel we need to do something now to improve that situation. I guess that is why my oldest hates Geometry so much. She is a good math student, just can't stand Geometry. @besroma It looks like the Gizmos site is geared to school districts purchasing? Are you doing the free trial right now?

Are you doing the free trial right now? We purchased through the HSBC. They do sell to homeschools. I think the license covers three children. I would definitely try the free trial to see if you like it. It is limited to what you can try, but it gives you a good idea. Our trial also had some loading issues, but we are having no problems with the actual subscription.
