iPad people, does this case exist?

Recommended Posts

I just bought our family an iPod 2 last night. It is mainly going to be for me and the kids, especially my 3 year old. Because of this, we want to get it a case that will help protect it from drops. I don't want a screen protector thought.

So is there a good case out there that any of you would recommend that can protect it well from drops but doesn't have screen protector built in?

Otterbox defender may be what you are looking for. But seriously, if a 3 year old is going to be around it, you need a screen protector. We use Griffin Survivor cases, which do have a complete screen cover that snaps on (vs a peel and stick type of screen protector) and it will survive nearly anything - water, dropped, etc.

I'm concerned about the cover decreasing the sensitivity of the screen. Have you found this to be a problem?

Not a bit. It is still ate sensitive to my typing errors!:D seriously, it's not an issue. And the protection, esp with little kids, is worth having.

not at all.

:iagree:

This is what I have on my old first edition of the iPad - and it's not to protect it from the kids, but to protect it from me :tongue_smilie:

Putting the screen protecter film thingy was a real PTIA for me, and if you aren't careful, you'll end up with a little bit of lint stuck underneath, but I have learned to live with it. If I had it to do over again, I probably would have left it off, but my kids - who do love to play games on it - are older and are less likely to scratch the screen with anything. Again, it would probably be me who would damage it, but then I'm clumsy that way.

For drops, and my DD's has had quite a few, nothing I've seen beats the iGuy. It's sold at Target and comes in three colors. Our kids' iPad doesn't have a scratch on it after a year and we didn't get a screen protector. The kids use the handles in all sorts of creative ways! Sometimes they hang it between the front seats like a movie screen. Sometimes they twist them back to prop the thing up halfway. DS holds one handle like a linus blankie. If anything happens to our iGuy, I will promptly replace it with a new one!

I've tried three different cases over the last couple of years. I really love my new GumDrop Drop Series Case that we got for my iPad 3. I liked it so much I got one for my DH too, who inherited my iPad 2. My first one covered the whole iPad, and the cover flipped over the screen like a book. I've tried several screen protectors, but IMO, they pixelate the image and it's very annoying.

The GumDrop does have a built in screen protector, and and did pixelate the screen a bit. However, I bought it because we were going on a three week road trip around the Southwest and I wanted something sturdy to protect my iPad. I love the GumDrop because while it protects it still leaves the important features free to use (ie: camera and speakers.) I had tried the Defender, but the flaps always fell back and made the iPad nearly impossible to use. Since we've returned from our trip, I pulled the plastic screen protector off the frame. If I change my mind, I can reorder a new one (screen protector only) from GumDrop for a few dollars.

My other MOST favorite iPad accessory is my Arkon Portable fold-up stand. It holds my iPad (inside it's case too!) both portrait and landscape. Plus, it's handy for ereaders and other electronics. It's really handy and lightweight.

Hope this helps!

I use the Sakroots case for mine.

It is leather and fabric, which provides some cushioning against drops and protection from spills, no screen protector (though you can add the sticky one if you wish). It has a built in easel for propping up but also folds flat, and is still relatively thin and lightweight; I did not want a case that made my iPad chunky or heavy. All ports and camera are still accessible.

When you pulled it off the frame, does the case still look good? I love everything about the gumdrop one except the screen protector. If I knew I'd have the option of taking the screen protector off if I don't like it, I think it's the one I'd go with.

We have the otterbox for both the iPhones and iPad we have had no problems with the screen protection. The 5 year old, 3 year old and even 1 year old (when he steals it away from someone) have no trouble with the sensitivity with the screen protector.

At first I tried it without the frame holding the screen protector, but it let a lot of dust in at the edges. I was able to pull the plastic protector off the back of the frame because it was glued down, and popped the empty frame back in. It looks more polished, and helps protect the screen because of the "lip" it makes, IMO. Dust still eventually works it's way underneath (we have lots of pets), but I really like the grab-and-go function of the case. I take my iPad with me EVERYWHERE. I don't have a smart phone, so my iPad has become my brain. *lol*
