So hard to pick only three, but if I'm picking the top favorites (from memory) that both a K and grade 3 would enjoy?

- Pinocchio (a richly illustrated version)

- Pippi Longstocking (again, richly illustrated)

- Paddington Bear (illustrated, notice a pattern, lol)

Other favorites though:

- Mr. Popper's Penguins

- Three Tales of My Father's Dragon (though we never read aloud, we have it on cd and have listened MANY times in the car - it's fantastic in audio format)

- Heidi

So far my kids have really enjoyed the Narnia series and the Wizard of Oz books. They have also liked Mr. Popper's Penguins, Farmer Boy (and all of the other Little House books, but this was their favorite), Twenty-One Balloons, and Charlotte's Web. I know that is more than 3 but I figured I would add a few in case you had already read some of them:)

My Father's Dragon set

BFG (Dahl)

Wizard of Oz (currently in the middle of this one, but my kids are enjoying it)

(As a small side note, we just finished Mr. Popper's Penguins, and although my almost 7 year old liked it, I don't like the book at all - I wish I had never purchased it)

Can you recommend specific illustrated editions?

When dd was in 1st-2nd grade, I read her all but the last book in the Little House series. She loved it. I loved it because Pa and Ma are such good parents.

DH is now reading Little House books to ds5 and ds7. The boys love it.

We have also thoroughly enjoyed "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" and "The Tale of Despereaux" by Kate KiCamillo.

Homer Price has also been a big hit.

Our top favorites this year have been:

1- The Trumpet of the Swan ( I love this book!)

2- Pinocchio (agree with pp about illustrated, but unabridged, version)

3- Ooh, maybe a tie between The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Little House in the Big Woods
