kubiac
I hope this wasn't posted and discussed already--I searched but didn't see it... ANYWAY, it sounds like these homeschoolers might be doing WTM! This was a nice run-down of the whys of memorization: Make kids memorize poetry: An old-fashioned educational practice makes a comeback, Salon.com, 2012-06-
AFwife Claire
Thanks for posting this! I put together the memory work for the younger kids for our little co-op, so it's an important subject for me! I agree with how useful learning to memorize is as a skill. We also work on it chunk-by-chunk, with weekly review, although we do a lot more than just poems. It always amazes me the capacity that kids have for memorizing. My 4th grade teacher was a big proponent of memory work as well, and the stuff we memorized that year still sticks with me as an adult! I just wish I had memorized more back then!
