mom24cuties
I need some recommendations for 2nd grade math for my daughter. I bought her saxon grade 2 math, but she doesn't like it, she says it is too easy, boring and it is the same thing everyday. She does it, but she whines and complains saying it's boring. I want something colorful and not to repetitive since she grasp concepts fairly easy. She loves math, she will do page after page until I tell her to move on to something else, and I don't want to ruin that by keeping her in something that she doesn't like. Element
I'm a fan of Singapore Math, but for something with a lot of fun and color, you could check out Horizons Math. Here is an example of a second grade page. Also, I think many families who use Saxon use it a grade ahead. I know our local classical private school uses Saxon 2 for grade 1, Saxon 3 for grade 2, etc. I haven't actually seen Saxon, so I could not say for sure how it compares to Singapore, Horizons, or anything else. boscopup
Math Mammoth and Singapore would be good to look at. We've used both (MM to accelerate to where DS really was in math, then switched to Singapore for the rest of elementary math, since it's a bit more "fun" in presentation). My son had to do Saxon at grade level in private school. It bored ME everyday, because yes, the worksheets are almost exactly the same each day, but with different numbers and a slightly incremental change. My son was likewise bored, since he is good at math and didn't need to be working at grade level in Saxon. :tongue_smilie:
edeemarie
You might want to consider McRuffy. It is spiral like Saxon but I find it to be challenging enough without being overwhelming. My kids have never complained about be bored OR that they were lost because it was going too fast. It has worked very well in our house. Five More Minutes
Math Mammoth and Singapore would be good to look at. :iagree:Singapore in particular is visually appealing, and is structured in a way that I find easy to accelerate when I need to. I found Saxon very difficult to accelerate because of its spiral nature. (And if your daughter is complaining that she's finding math easy, she may need to accelerate through topics once she's comfortable with them.) You can find a placement test for Singapore math, which I'd recommend taking if you want to switch. Based on my experience with Saxon 1, I believe that Singapore is slightly ahead of Saxon in scope and sequence in the early years. It also teaches topics differently, so she may need to back up a bit just to work with those concepts. If you're interested in more, I recently blogged about using Singapore 2A. kemilie
I agree that the Horizon books are very colorful and "fun". They are still a bit repetitive though, you probably want to go at least one grade level ahead... at least that's my experience with them! jenbrdsly
People have mentioned on the Accelerated Learner board that Saxon is really boring for kids who are natural at math. I'd second looking into Singapore or maybe Right Start.

Rosie
Singapore and/or Miquon. You might also like this for over the summer or in addition to a regular program...
