MinivanMom
We are going to be spending the next 2 years on American history and I am wanting to study American artists and composers at the same time. Up until now we have been studying one artist and one composer at a time, but I don't feel like my kids have been getting that much out of it. They seem to get more out of just wandering through our local art museum or looking through larger art anthologies. They enjoy classical music after all our time listening to it, but are bored with the one composer at a time approach (and can't keep them straight at all). I'm not sure what I'm looking for instead. Maybe it could be an art/music appreciation program that focuses on American artists. Maybe I would be better off just buying a large anthology of American art. I have no idea what to do about music. Any ideas?

Spetzi
Artistic Pursuits has a year focused on American artists. It's art appreciation and hands on so it might not exactly fit the bill, but it's all I thought of.

aug17girl
I like the idea of a folk song study, but if you want to focus on composers Classics for Kids has radio episodes on American Composers http://www.classicsforkids.com/shows/past.asp The Americans in chronological order would be Sousa, Ives, Joplin, Still, Gershwin, Copeland, Berstein. They have activity pages for each episode http://www.classicsforkids.com/activitysheets/
ChicoryChick
I like the book by MaryAnn Kohl "Great American Artists" (I think that ir what it is called). It has a liitle blurb on the artist's life and a project to go along with it. You could always use it for a springboard and have them look up books or in the encyclopedia for more info about the artists life.t Edited June 13, 2012 by kayinpa
nellecv
Here is a blog post where I talked about what we did this year to go along with American history: American Artist and Folk Song Study Thank you so much for this! I think folk music is currently undervalued, and I'll definitely be borrowing some ideas.
