Khan Academy surprise

Last night after reading a little about Khan academy here at the Hive I stopped by and watched a few videos. I then saw that they offered lessons where you can earn points and badges. So this morning I told my boys about it. They are NOT math fans. But they do like games and my 8 year old is a fan of Roblox where he was able to earn badges. They immediately wanted to do it so after church I signed them up. Wow! They loved it. I thought they might like to do it during school, but they wanted to play it all afternoon. Earning points to be able to pick a new avatar and getting badges for completing tasks were highly motivating. They kept going and going and going. My 8 year old jumped around the skill map and even tried out calculus. Squeals of excitement and running to see every new badge that the other received were commonplace. I am competing with them and they are trying to beat my score. They can't wait to start again in the morning. I'm not sure how long this will last, but if you have a child who loves games then this might be a hit in your house too.

What impressed me the most was the positive self-talk. I heard my son say several times "I'm good at this." I'm not sure how long this excitement will last, but I'll ride the wave for now.

The night I discovered KAHN I set up accounts for my kids. Of course, I set up an account for myself so I could be their 'coach.' Then I had to play a little while so I could really see it in action. Then, I had to sheepishly close the computer 2 hours later at 1am when my husband asked if I was ever coming to bed. Yeah, it can be addictive.:001_huh:
