I respectfully ask if an offer is a possibility. Then, I am patient to allow the items to sell at the price the seller wishes. After a given amount of time, I ask the seller to contact me if they are willing to accept.

I have a limit rule that my dh and I have agreed to. It is 1/2 of new. Anymore than that and I just choose to buy new.

I have contacted a person before and said

You are asking a fair price but it is higher that I can pay. If you aren't able to sell it at your asking price, and if you would consider accepting X, I would be interested in buying it from you.

Here is my contact information>...

I have had people take me up on the offer a few times.

I'm curious about the 1/2 new rule, I like to pay that too, but do you add into that the cost of shipping? I usually offer items up about half of new but add in for mailing cost. :bigear:

This is not a new rule for me. It is a blanket kind of limit. I either pay 1/2 or buy new. My dh has agreed with me that shipping is over the 1/2. So I will pay 1/2 plus actual shipping. tops. I do consider if I could get it for free shipping from Amazon, RR, SL, etc. and that can be a factor.

Ok, I checked four boxes. lol It really depends on the item. Some are more in demand than others and can get away with being a bit higher for a used item. I am not one to haggle on a forum, but I do make good use of the Best Offer button on eBay. I am pretty good at price comparing and I prefer to buy used for the most part.

One thing I've noticed since we started using LoF is that these books seem to be sold used almost as much as new. On the author's site, the lower elementary books are 16.95 with free shipping. So, I've been buying mine there.

I voted grumble and pay it because it's still less than new, and email an offer - worst they can do is say no. It really depends on the item. Something to consider is there are different levels of "used". Something that was used for a week and shelved is worth more than if it had been used all the way through, obviously. I like to know the details of condition, and when given a choice, often pick the item with a thorough description over a vague one because I know what to expect.

:iagree: I also have about a 1/3 rule plus shipping & insurance for selling and buying used...unless I can see the items first hand.

I don't haggle.

If I want it for the price offered, I'll buy it. If the listed price is too high, I just move on.

I REALLY dislike it when people try to haggle with me.

I picked option one.

I have no problem with someone offering me a lower price, as I can always reject it. I would rather have a back up that I can consider than no offers at all. If you have ZERO response, how can you know if it is overpriced or something that has no market?

I must price my things ok, as I rarely have hagglers. I try to find the sweet spot. :D

I never have a problem emailing someone to see if they might be willing to come down. Sometimes, they are grateful to just get rid of something.
